Subject: Free Prop Ideas

motorhappy ( ) posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 11:41 PM · edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 7:27 PM

I'm wanting to contribute something to the free section just to get more involved in the community here. I'm still in the learning stages of Poser, but have decent modeling skills. I'd like some ideas of stuff you guys would like to see for a free prop. Thanks.

When you say props do you mean clothing ? or buildings ? or auots ? .....

There used to be a "wishing well" here, but I can't find it anywhere. Has it gone away or am I going blind?

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

I'm always looking for everyday objects and scenes - there is so much clothing, so many swords and guns. But when you need to make a scene realistic, you need of course to populate it with characters AND objects. A wall and a Vicki doesn't get you far :o) So for instance, a temple is all very well.... but a street scene? A lounge needs to have filled bookshelves in it, things on tha table, a forest floor needs grass and plants, a tiled bathroom with all the little things that you would find there. Toothbrushes, etc... A porch/veranda, a garage, a worksop. All the things you might find in such places..... Futuristic and sci-fi scenes, with lots of little goodies, things that might have been used to make for instance a film set look more realistic, 'lived in'. So there are an almost infinite number of things one can model - if one can model, which I can't unfortunately...... : Fish

I'm always looking out for industrial items - heavy machinery, a fork-lift truck, a crane, anything like that.

I really really really want a mobile phone! One that looks like a modern one. I have a couple of older style ones (big with aeriels) but would love my Vicky to sport a swish new Nokia, or how about a morphing/opening Samsung!

Pick something in which YOU are interested. It is your time being invested. If you love it and do it well, others will be appreciative. There are subjects which are overdone (torture devices and altars and fantasy armor, for example) and others which have never been touched. Lat's take gremlins. We have a nice gremlin model, thanks to DAZ, and since it has been offered freely in so many places, just about everyone who wanted him has him. Gremlins live inside machinery. We have several computer models... but has ANYBODY modeled the inside of a computer with wires and plugs? The gremlin probably beds down on top of the nice warm powerpack. Automotive engine? Refridgeration assembly of a cola machine? Clock tower? If it has parts and a cover, there is probably room for a gremlin and his kin! Speaking of clock towers... if you like architecture, what about a miniature golf park with lots of neat buildings, bridges, ramps? With bright colors, they would be good for the toonimals; with normal colors they'd work for housemouses or fairies... and of course families with kids. This is something which could be added to over time, and artists could download a specific structure or the entire set. If you are a bird-watcher, there is a major need for a selection of birds: pigeons/doves, towhees, magpies, pheasants, grouse, sandpipers.... Just some thoughts. If you love music, gardening, scuba-diving, whatever, take a look at what you use and what is around you. :) Most of all, have fun. Carolly

I saw that a simple pen had about 2000 downloads. How about simple things?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2003 at 10:56 PM

Sorry, Cooler. According to An Exaltation of Larks, it is "a dropping of pigeons". Pigeons do drop in a group, so I can accept that. "A gatling of woodpeckers", "a swoop of swallows" and "a squabble of seagulls" are all fine terms of venery. "A chain of bobolinks" was somebody's failed attempt at cleverness. "A parade of penguins" and "a jubilee of eagles" are almost as great as the phrase used for the book's title. Carolly

Attached Link: http://rinkworks.com/words/collective.shtml

some of my favorites, (from the same book :-), are "a murder of crows", "ostentation of peacocks" & "a romp of otters". pigeons however have several collective descriptions including, flight, dropping, and yes flock :-) the link above is for a webpage with a representative listing of collective animal nouns for those of you who don't have the book :-)

This reminds me that I need to finish a story-game. We are using terms of venery, some of which we are making up, as we write the alternate chapters. For those of you who don't know... "venery" is a 500-year-old game of creating collective names, where wit and perception are appreciated and mere puns are frowned upon. As a punster, I have to restrain my first, second, and third impulses. :sniff: Carolly
