Subject: Problems importing

looksgood ( ) posted Wed, 22 January 2003 at 8:08 PM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 5:04 PM

I have downloaded some stuff from the force 3d web site thing. Problem is the stuff was in 3ds format. I need to get the stuff into poser 4 pro. When I try to import it though, all that shows up on the document screen is nothing! I can't even go to the file menu because it is all blocked out. Does anyone know how to import the stuff? am I doing something wrong?

I've had that happen when the 3ds file was too big.

PLZ FOR ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD, HELP!!! What do I do? What do I need? Is there some program I am missing? I am desparet here!

Did you check to see if the 3ds files contained only polygonal models? Poser can't handle NURBS, splines, Bezier curves, parametric objects. Just to be sure.

You might try converting the 3ds files to obj using Crossroads (link) or another 3d format converter. I haven't had any problems with the few 3ds files I've tried importing into Poser. If you post a link to the site and list one of the models you're having problems with, maybe someone else can try it.

Are you shrinking it to 100% normal figure size on import? If not, do that. Michael is but a flea on a flea to the typical .3ds object. It may be loading and just be too big to see. Poser 4 without ProPack is perfectly able to import .3ds files. Beatyoursoul: it's supposed to take care of the 5+ polys on import. Recommendation: import scaling to 100% of regular figure size, then scale it until it looks right and export it as a Wavefront OBJect.

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 23 January 2003 at 7:33 AM

Mean tto say, then when you re-import the wavefront OBJect it will be to scale. BTW, if, for some reason, the file has an open spline in it Poser will choke on it. I made the Arachnid form the Other Movies section posable last night. But I think I can't distribute it because a) scifi3d doesn't bothr answering email, apparently, so I can't get permission and b) I refuse to distribute anything withtheir license terms, which insist that you have to credit their site on the image itself. That's BS. If I use it in a render, be prepared for me to violate those terms, too. I'm not putting an ad for their site, which is really just composed of things other people contributed anyway (not that it would make a difference) on my artwork itself,. Underneath in the comments, sure. On the image, no way. I don't care if the guy who runs it disagrees with the idea that it screw up the image. He's effing wrong. If they dont' like that I don't so it, they can **** my ****ing ****. Sorry, ranted. I get pissed off just thinking about that site's petty little demand to screw up your art.

The site I am getting it from is www.theforce.net/scifi3d . I am trying to get the jedi fighter ship to work. I tryed the crossroad thing and at least with it I made the thing into a obj and was able to see something but it was all distorted.

looksgood: I know, that's why I went on that rant.

LOL, I know. I compleatly understand. I am getting to the point of rants myself. LOL

There's something screwy about the 3ds file. I had the same results looksgood had in Poser. I opened it in a viewer/converter (3D Exploration) and couldn't see anything. I exported it as an obj file and was able to open it in Poser. Before I exported, I deleted four boxes which were floating over the ship and seemed to be extraneous.

Mea culpa, I forgot. I hope I'm not supporting terrorism or anything. Promise you won't tell. No wait, it does say it, just very very tiny.

I had the same idea - we should follow their "advice" but make the text subpixel size. :)
