Subject: To "split" or not to "split"

I'm learning more and more about modeling in 3dsmax for poser, and am in a bit of a quandry. I understand the problem with square type objects being "rounded" and the need to split the vertices (in UVMapper). The problem comes when I have multiple shapes in the same object. The image attached to this message is a simple test which is exported directly from 3dsMax to Poser without splitting the vertices. Of couse the square edges are rounded appearing.

The image attached to this message is the same file, now with the vertices split. The square object looks much better, but the round surfaces look unsmoothed.

I'm guessing the problem is solved by somehow selectively splitting the vertices, but I need some help with that. Any hints?

Geep has a good tutorial class on this. Perhaps this will help Tom

Thanks! I had seen that tutorial before, but never noticed a small blurb about using the grouping tool to split the model allowing some to be split and others not.

If you have modelling software, you can easily split the specific vertices which make up an edge, or you can seperate off faces or groups of faces. Some also allow you to do this automatically based on teh smoothing groups.

Get UV Mapper Pro. It's $50 and worth every cent. It has the option to split vertices at whatever angle you want. mac
