Do you like Figaro's art? It's very minimalist, but for some reason I like it. When I do graphics work I like to try new things and I want critique not a pat on the back. My graphic pen piece was a disaster.."One guy said I should go back to using cayons", but nobody told me what I did wrong, or how I could imporove the "penwork". Its tough to avoid the "pat-on the-back club". So where can you get honest critique that's not spiteful. I'll tell you right now D don't post at ablemuse. It's not for you. Also don't post at poetry.com everything posted...no comments...all vanity publishing and awards.
I suppose that's true, but I often feel that people offer praise out of kindness so I don't trust it. I distrust compliments because I don't know if the person really liked the story or the graphic, or they just don't want to hurt my feelings. And the problem I have with criticism is that it often doesn't help me fix what the problem is. I know my style of writing tends to be soft and soapy, but I don't know how to put an edge to my curvey words. I guess you either know how to do it or you don't and, while a critique can say: "well, that's spelled wrong" or "those words don't rhyme," they can't really tell you how to change a style that is insufficient. So I stop writing for long periods of time, hoping that when I resume I will forget my style. But each time I resume, my style is no tougher...resistent to the changes of time, my style remains droopy. Better not to write than stare at words that float soggily on the page. I don't need a critic to tell me what's wrong. Apparently I would need a miracle to fix it. Or perhaps a transplant of someone else's genetic coding who has the kind of sleek style that I admire but can't achieve. And, then I look at my graphics, and dang if they don't have the same problem. I who am difficult and cranky and cynical end up with gentle, childlike graphics with the same soapy quality to them. Sigh. So, tjames. I appreciate people who take the time to comment on what I've done, and thank them kindly for their generousity to try to help, but I won't ask for criticism knowing some part of me remains resistent to change despite all my conscious efforts.
P.S. While Cresecent is working on getting us a Writer's Gallery, I've made the suggestion (and if you are interested, please post your idea on the appropriate thread too) to have a genre such as "story" or (as someone else suggested) "narrative" for graphics combined with stories or poems that don't fit in the existing categories. Which most of mine don't.
To me, it means a graphic that tells a story and/or is accompanied by a story, part of a story, or poetry. But you know, I'm often wrong about these things. It probably is open to interpretation at this point. I had three graphics that fit no where in another genre so I was happy to slip them into Story for lack of a better place to put them. I have a two series of graphics that roughly tell a story without words...I'm thinking of placing them in this genre even though I have no narrative to go with them. Whatcha think? Was it worth adding or is it a useless category? I don't know. The dust hasn't settled around the genres yet.
Oh, you beat me to it! There is a story genre up in the galleries now. I asked Tammy about it and she said that the Story genre is currently just pictoral, but it is a step in the right direction for us. (Pictures meant to tell a story.) They're working on how they could put in a true writing gallery. Cheers!
Good news, Crescent! Great job! :) But I'm leaving my graphics in the Story genre for the time being. It's too time consuming to move the darn things. And I still think graphics that have a narrative with them might find a little home there for the time being. I'm so stubborn. Not that any of you doubted that for a second.
Don't sweat it. I'm not going to report you to the genre police. ;-) Yep, categorizing the pictures is a bit of an SOB. What I do is right click on the Edit Picture link and open it up in a new window. That way, once I've changed the categories for that picture, I can close the window and go to the next picture. (Once you change a category on one picture, it bumps you to the regular gallery.) I still have to go and categorize all of mine.
Chuck put his last graphic in the Story genre too (unless he's moved it) so I don't feel so alone. I look on this as an evolutionary process so I expect I'll be going back through my gallery at some point. I should do some major deletes. It's hard to get rid of some of the older graphics. I know they aren't great but they each represented something I learned. Hard to let go.
THANKS for the info, Cres! I've trudged along slowly getting bumped back like you described.
Well, dialyn, though there was some mention of the "Story" genre being for pictures that told a story (I would guess that meant a sequence or something), I figured, "What the heck." I thought there might be a use for a gallery that paired a graphic and a narrative (and have seen a good many of them) but general discussion here didn't seem to indicate so. SOooo, I guess I'll sneak mine in there instead...(smile).
![turkey.gif](http://www.chuck-n-michelle.net/images/turkey.gif) Sure, you can strive to fly with the eagles but turkeys don't get sucked into jet engines.
I think it should be possible for an artist to change the subheadings on some of his/her prior submissions. I've been putting most of my submissions in the 2d gallery, but now there's a 2d and surreal, a 2d and illustration and a 2d with landscape. How can you do that? And shouldn't the genre be recorded on the page when you go to the artist's gallery?

There are going to be new search features developed.Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12357&Form.ShowMessage=1120701
I guess I'm not running into the problem you are and that's why I'm not understanding what is going on for you. I think all the galleries listed have been activated but some of the sorting/searching mechanisms are a little cranky. It is unusually cold here this morning so I'm a little cranky .... not to mention creaky!!! You might want to post your problem on the thread (link provided). You may have noticed this already, but there is now a Hobbyists Gallery. I'm really thrilled about this. I never felt comfortable in the Poser Gallery, but I felt I was a little beyond the beginner stage. This is perfect for me. I guess we haven't quite achieved a Writer's gallery yet, but this gives me hope they are pushing to make beneficial changes on Renderosity. I'm going to gradually move all my gallery to the Hobbyist's new zone. I feel guilty every time an artists complains about non-art in the Poser gallery. Now I don't have to feel guilty...I've found a home!!!
