Subject: .bum files in PPP

Are these files needed for Pro Pack users? I have seen many topics about these files and I have seen they need to be converted to jpg. And that once that is done, Poser reads the jpg file. These bum files are so large just wondering if it is safe to delete them.??? Or maybe I understood wrong?

Pro Pak only needs the .jpg NOT the Bum files. So as for deleting them,It could be best to back them up, Just in case you accidently delete the jpgs for example.

Unlike JPEG, .bum files are uncompressed. That's why they're so large. Pro Pack can read .bum files; it just can't create new ones. But it can also use JPEG files as bump maps, so if you want to replace the .bum files and edit your Library files to point to the JPEGs instead, that's an option. It'll certainly save you some disk space.

In this same vein some installers have installed duplicate copies of certain stuff in my Poser Library. One is labeled for Poser 4 without Pro Pack and one set is Poser 4 with Pro Pack. I have Pro Pack, so I can I safely delete the files that are supposed to be for Poser without Pro Pack. Has anyone done this? Why to you suppose they did duplicates since Pro Pack can read BUM files.

Yes, you can delete the poser 4 stuff. Well, at least let me say this, I downloaded some textures or MAT files, (Cant remember now) and in the readme, it said that there were files for both Poser 4 and Poser Pro Pack. then it said that you could delete the files for the version you do not have to save disk space. So I have been doing that too. and so far have had no problems. :)

The hassle is with Poser 5. It uses JPEG, and does not convert JPEG to BUM as an outside step, the Poser 4 renderer will use a BUM directly, or convert a JPEG to BUM inside its internal brain as it needs it. The FireFly bump only use JPEG (or other std. greyscale formats). If a BUM is the only format supplied, it is difficult to get an accurate un-conversion back to the original greyscale.
