Subject: Member Profile Options

heyas; firstly, thank you a TON for the option to kill the ebot notifications of being added as a favorite artist, or when your favorite artists upload new things. if it isn't too much to ask, can i also kill the ebot that tells me somebody commented on my images? that goes straight to the trash anyway. now i have a complaint. (yeah, what's new?) why can't i save my ebot favorite artist preferences unless i enter my country? i never had to enter that before. i don't see anything in the tos stating i have to claim any nationality. is this one of those freaky new laws i've heard about or what?

bloodsong - you should not be receiving these notifications if the "Receive notification when members add you or your gallery images to their favorites list?" option on the "My Profile" page is selected as no. Please let me know if this is not working for you. Thanks. Tommy

heyas; well, it is set to YES and i'm trying to set it to NO, but i can't, because of this country nonsense. that's what i mean.

tutone1234 ( ) posted Mon, 17 March 2003 at 3:54 PM

bloodsong - there's no law to enter your country, but we have deemed that requiring the country is necessary demographic information for our marketing and statistical tracking purposes. I apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks. Tommy

I thought we'd be told about stuff like this ? I can understand the need for a demographic, -voluntary- metric, but a word about it would have been nice, in for instance the rendo weekly flier. Any reason this did not happen ? I'd also like to see a help file or FAQ about profiles now - if nothing else, you'd avoid questions like this when new stuff got implemented :-) ~S

Tracking purposes. That sounds insidious, doesn't it? marketing and statisical tracking purposes can be gotten from the payment on purchases; having to provide this sort of info for a membership access( a free one) is just intrusion.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 18 March 2003 at 11:21 AM

Of course, you know, no one is forcing you to answer truthfully. And probably as a tracking device, it is fairly worthless because so many people do lie on the Internet (not always for malicious purposes but because of privacy issues).

spinner ( ) posted Tue, 18 March 2003 at 11:24 AM

So how come you guys don't use the IP addies for this ? You'd get the data, and you'd keep a degree of anonymity ~S

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 18 March 2003 at 4:21 PM

heyas; okay, i did read about tracking general demographic information about memebers in the tos, so i guess that qualifies. dialyn: i just don't want to accidentally pick a country that anybody hates :)

LOL...!!! I thought Switzerland was always safe. ;)

We only require a few areas on the profile page to be completed which includes country. We felt communicating one's country is no where intrusive as asking for your date of birth, address, city, phone number, etc.. which we do not require. If this appears to be a major concern for many members, then we will rethink this. thanks tammy

I wonder how many people have suddenly moved to Guam or Zimbabwe? Incidentally, In My Opinion, the information is being collected so that the mailing list can be sold. If you didn't notice, there was a radio button to indicate whether or not you wanted to recieve "Special Offers". A targeted mailing list of valid names and addresses are a nice hunk of change. I think the last time I looked a targeted list goes for about 3-8 dollars a name for a ONE TIME MAILING. THe same list can be sold over and over again.

tutone1234 ( ) posted Tue, 18 March 2003 at 4:59 PM

Hisminky we don't sell mailing lists to 3rd parties. By marketing we mean so that we can learn what countries we may need to focus more attention to gain additional membership or even advertising renderosity in certain publications in certain regions of the world. As well as see how effective any marketing efforts are by analyzing new membership data after we have marketed Renderosity in a particular region. Furthermore, the "Special Offers" means special offers directly from Renderosity. Not from an unknown source.

Furthermore, the "Special Offers" means special offers directly from Renderosity. Not from an unknown source.<< Nowhere on that document page does it specify that the "Special Offers" are from Renderosity only. The fact that it ISN'T specified means that any time in the future it COULD be from a sold mailing list. And quite frankly, the administration has made that type of "executive decision" in the recent past. You'll just have to forgive me for having a suspicious nature considering the less than sterling motives in the past.

I wish I had the luxury of complaining about being someones favourite artist lol but that's never going to happen. Just curious to know, is there a way to find out who is the most favourite favourite artist? A hot 20 or something? Shanna :-)

In the gallery if you select a certain topic when you go to that area..... under sort by: you will see Hot20. At this time the favorite artists and the hot20 are separate. The Hot20 is by vote. thanks tammy
