Does any other program use 'em? And no, by the way, I don't think this is becoming an obsession :)

Rhino can create terrains from height maps. Poser uses bump maps to draw pockets,zippers on characters.

I am not familiar with terragen, but doesn't it also use g2h maps?

almost any high end 3 package can displace a mesh using a height map. Reffered to as "displacement mapping."

ok, that's good...unfortunatly i can't use terragen or rhino, OR poser 5, for that matter, but i can try out maya PLE.

Amorphium has a workspace called heightshop for using maps to shape and deform mesh.

Quite a couple of programs use them, but most only support 8 bit or 3x8bit Heightmaps, which is pretty bad compared to the 16 bit the true renderers provide ;-) Klaus
