Subject: Trouble with hand

Hi all,

I am working on my first project and I have run into a problem with this characters hand.

If you look at his fingers, near the knuckles, you will see a dip in the finger. The only way I can figure out how to get rid of this is to have the finger pointing in the complete opposite direction, not good for what I need. this mainly happens on the ring finger, but the middle finger has it happening too, just slightly.

Anyone know how I can fix this? Please keep in mind I am new to Poser, try to keep technical terms to a limit.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Have you checked the dials and zeroed the poses for those joints? Alt- click on the dial zeros it. Emily

I've been playing with hands, particularly those for the PT MilGirl, and have a pack of 500 hd2 poses at Daz. But I am doing similar packs for Mike2 and V3. Most 'natural' hand poses, when rendered in close-up, need a degree of post work. The usual problems are mesh distortions around the base of the thumb and single polygons that stick out between fingers. The cause is the lack of 'elasticity' in 3D objects, at least in the 3D objects that we use in Poser. The specific problem you're having, judging by the render, is that you have the first joint of the ring finger bent too far. Although the hand looks 'normal' here, if you view it side-on, I'll bet the finger looks awkward. Bend the joint back a bit and use a bit more bend on the second and third joints. The other thing is, it looks as if you've been using side-to-side movement on the ring and middle fingers. Could be they're overlapping, in which case it's not a dent in the ring finger, but the middle finger's mesh encroaching into it. Good luck with your project. But if it's a set of hand poses for Mike, then yah boo sucks, I'm there already! Hee hee. Moochie.

Thank you for the response.

Yes, I have been using the side to side dials, but the fingers are not crossing over one another. I checked this by turning off the visibility on the hand.

Zooming in on the hand, I found that the problem is the webbing between the fingers, I think. It is intruding into the ring finger, the above pic shows this.

I guess I'll have to move the finger.

Hmm. Looking at the close up, and bearing in mind the distortion also showing between the ring finger and pinky, I do believe you've got a bit of 'beyond limits' twisting or lateral bending going on. The other clue in this view is the lighting; remember that for light to appear brighter on some parts of the mesh implies that the angle of the polygons being lit is different from surrounding areas. I know this sounds like a statement of the bleedin' obvious, but here you have a part of the hand that should be in the shade (between the fingers) actually showing as brightly lit. I therefore suspect that what you are showing us is an optical illusion .. what appears as contiguous mesh between two fingers actually isn't. Render a sideways view and it'll show the fingers at odd angles to each other. Either that or I'll eat my words. Which is cool cos I'm a bit peckish!

heyas; it's not that broken finger bug that victoria had when she first came out (or second came out), or anything like that, is it? what figure is that, renegade? and what version, and did you do anything to it in the setup room (if you have a setup room)?
