Good question and one that lawyers love to argue over. It really depends on the end user license that the shader provider includes with the shader. If the "granite" shader was made with an imbedded photo then the texture map image you create from it would be a direct dirivitave of that image & I think would be problomatic. If it were generated from a procedural shader then it probably would be OK to distribute it. In that case the image map is more an output of the program itself. You should'nt distribute Carrara files with outside vendor shaders included though (unless you get permission). You really should ask the person/company you get the shader from for the final story.

I have a question about the Carrara Shaders and how the copyright applies. Let's see I were to create an object in Carrara and the apply shader(s) to it that were purchased online, say a "granite" shader. I subsequently export the object to an OBJ and export the shaders as JPG texture(s). Are the JPG textures covered under the shader's copyright or just the shader itself? I expect that the JPG would be protected as well, right? Brian
