Subject: Height Morphs - the next step for DAZ?

Its incredible that with all the morphs for Vicki - faerie, heavy, muscular, etc. , there are no height morphs. The trend for figures out there seems to be an amazonish 6 feet tall. Im suprised that theres such a huge void when it comes to figures of different height and corresponding proportions. It makes sense that the standard would be a tall, statuesque woman not unlike a supermodel. There are a couple of approaches for changing height on figures, such as the figure height feature in poser. That tends to work well for making a character taller, not that Vicki needs to be any taller. The shorter heights have a weird effect that I'm sure everyone is familiar with (especially in the neck area). You can also decrease the scale or Y scale of the entire body but that doesnt preserve the proportionality of the human form. This isnt any sort of complaint, just an observation of what seems to be a huge void in the diversity of Vicki's morphing abilities. I would be interested in anybody's approaches to making a shorter, heavier morphed figure. I guess whats really needed is a anatomically correct formula for scaling different body parts and limbs according to varying heights.

The best I've come up with is a combination of shortening the Y scale in main body parts (hip, abs, chest) and useing the stretch arms and legs (negative value). Then seperate pieces of the body need to be individually adjusted for fit. Even then there are some join problems. This isn't a Poser or Daz Studio type issue, it goes back to the basic model of the figure. You can get quite a bit of proprtional height variation just using the stretch arms and legs. The biggest problem is getting clothing to fit the morphed character. The strech morphs don't corrospond to any clothing I've seen available. A good morph master could create the kind of variation you want. But then they'd have to come up with clothing to fit. On a for sale item, it increases the work and decreases the profit.

What I do is to select Body, then adjust the scale(NOT x, y, or z scales, but the overall scale). This preserves the proportions while making the figure larger or smaller. As far as clothing goes, you don't need any morphs to adapt them. Just apply the same scaling to the clothing as you did to the figure.

I've been making different height characters since Poser2. It's simply a matter of scaling the Body, and then scaling individual bodyparts. Clothing needs to be scaled to fit .. but that's not terribly difficult. Admittedly there are some characters and clothing items that object to this sort of rough handling ... but if you look at my looks-like-Wolfrider on my DL page, you'll see what is possible. He stands at about 4.5 feet tall ... all done with scaling.

I did it with Victoria 2 for Dewdrop. I even included a pose file that did the applied scaling for her. It was over a year ago and Traveler helped me with it. Alot of Victoria's clothing could be fitted to her using the same scale pose and some adjustments.

There are shorter Victoria 1/2 characters in the Roxanne package. To create these I had to change her joint parameters. This was to get rid of the breaking. They actually work very well. However, clothing the figures is a little more complicated than with the default sized figures. Essentially, Roxanne's figure pose must be applied to the clothing item so that it has the same joint changes as the figure. After doing this, you apply the same action pose to both the figure and the clothing item. You can't conform clothing to the scaled figures without severe distortion, hence posing the clothing to the figure. And, fitting the clothes properly requires matching morphs in the clothing. The attached image shows some of the Roxanne figures. The image closely represents the figure proportions.

Yes, you can use scaling to roughly change the figures proportions, but this is not an optimal solution or the only one possible in the realm beyond Poser. Beth's solution of changing the rigging to reflect the new shape is far more accurate. ML

Height isn't something you do with morphs. It would push all the parts beyond their sillouetes and you wouldn't be able to select them. Not an option.

does anyone have a formula for adjusting the different body parts in a proportional way that is anatomically correct? the arms and legs vs. chest, abs. etc. I find scaling the entire figure just doesnt look right.

There is absolutly no problem with scaling Poser figures in proportion, just select the body and turn the scale dial. The problemes come when you try to scale them out of proportion, and those seem to be big problems. From the very little bit of experience I have had doing this, I try to achive the general proportions with the scale dials, then un-hide the translation dials for some tweaking, then use morphs to try to fix what is still broken. The image is 3 Victorias, and two posettes one with fat and the other with thin scaling.

Of course making the figures bigger or smaller is never a problem. Easy as pie. As someone pointed out, turn the Body Scale dial, voila. But making them shorter or taller (only/mostly on the y axis) is difficult since the joins won't be right. A pain to be sure, but it can be done, with a lot of careful twiddling. I can make Vicki2 look like she is 10 with scaling and morphs - without major joint troubles. Even get clothes to fit as long as I scale them exactly the same. :] Fish

height and scaling is easy and can be done rather quickly, even with vicky 3 this character took about 5 minutes to scale, turning the dials and spawning the morphs actually took longer, sorry about the bad quality of the top image, i dont usually save as jpgs and didnt notice that the quality was set low. if you want scale settings i can write them down and post it up. thanks dave
