Subject: Best "map" option in UVmapper to select in order to make texture map?

pookah69 ( ) posted Sat, 31 May 2003 at 12:28 PM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 2:55 PM

When attemption to make a template for a texture map from UVmapper, which "map" option should one select from the pull-down menu "planar","cylindrical" etc.... Are there any good tutorials for taking you through the process of creating a texture map in UVmapper?

I just put up a small tutorial that may help you a little on our site....and it depends on what you are texturing....Sharen Scroll down to the bottom and the tut is the last icon. Just click and download

It depends on which type of object you're trying to map really. I know it sounds obvious but, if you want to map a cylinder, you should use 'cyllindrical'. I'm not trying to be funny or anything. You usually just have to start from the basic shape of the object you're mapping. Having said that, there are times when another mapping option is better than the obvious one. For example, box-mapping is good for square or cube-shaped objects, but you may get a better map if you mix different type of mapping for different parts of the object. If you tell me what you're mapping, I could maybe help more. Often the best way to see is to do it. Select the object and map it with all the different options to see which looks the best. mac PS The link is to steve cox's uv mapper forum.

PS Sharen. Your link doesn't seem to work

The two things I am trying to map are: 1.) A concrete slab (just an elongated cube really, to which I want to add a concrete texture) 2.) An IV stand, which I downloaded from 3d Cafe. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, the link is working now....I was updating...Sharen

Try again....

Well, the concrete slab could just be done with box mapping. You have several options. You can map with or without gaps in the map. With gaps will leave you space between the various parts, but with no gaps, you can 'wrap' your texture, or lay it across the whole thing so it's continues around edges. You can also split or not split the map. Splitting maps all 6 sides. Not splitting maps 3 sides, so you get front and back looking the same. The IV stand. No idea. I'd need to see it. If it's a series of tubes, then cylindrical would be ok. Remember, in uv mapper you can use the marquee to select different parts and map them in different ways. Check the list of hotkeys. There are a bunch of handy shorcuts to hide/unhide some parts while you're working on others. mac

PS To map the slab for maximum quality, you can enlarge each side to fill the frame and 'stack' the sides on top of one another. The bigger the sides are in the frame, the bigger area of the texture they'll receive. And MOST IMPORTANT! Don't forget to save the obj after you mapped it, and if it's a figure or prop with external geometry, delete the .rsr file in geometries before you try it. Otherwise poser will keep on using the old mapping which is stored in the rsr. mac

oh..that helps. Always wanted to do some textures. Now if I could just get organized on what to apply them with, I'd be dangerous.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I think mapping in UV now is the most fun I have, I love to take all the pieces apart now for really close up details...Sharen

Sharen this link was dead? "Roy Riggs-PhiBuilder Application"

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 01 June 2003 at 12:34 AM

One other point to consider is orientation of your object in space. When you run the mapper along the y axis you may get a mess of lines, whereas running it along the z axis might give you a clear shot at your arrangement. So, if you are mapping a soup can and the cylindrical mapper doesn't fall into place the way it "obviously" should, just play with the axes until things line up. Different modeling programs handle the y-axis differently, so when you import an obj into UVMapper, you may think the little critter is upright, but the source code might be standing him on his noggin. foleypro, it is fixed now....the Roy Riggs- phi builder I mean. Sharen

Thanks...Cool oh Sharen,Steve Cox said in his Forum that he was looking for Tutorials out there focusing on his UVMapper program so I sent him an e-mail informing him of yours...

Oh okay, just remember mine is just a basic one, but thanks anyway, Steve is a great guy and has a lovely family, I will also write him regarding it. Sharen

I still don't get it. I'm probably being dense, but when I open the cube in UVmapper, I choose the box map and am presented with six sides of the cube. From the "File" pull-down menu, I then create a texture map . Then, in photoshop, I paint on the texture map, giving each of the six sides of the cube a different texture. When I apply this file to the cube in Poser, I get the full map (all six sides) painted on each of the six sides of the cube. What am I overlooking?

You did save the modified OBJ as well as the template?

pookah69 ( ) posted Sun, 01 June 2003 at 6:29 PM

Rhaseltine, I just saved the .obj, and YES, now it does seem to work. Thanks--this is great. I just created a transparency map. Very cool! This opens a whole new realm of possibilities.
