Ease of use is of prime importance - a built spiel-checkre would likely get great deel more yewse than even comparatively easy alternatives. People (and I'm probably candidate #1 here) just cannot WAIT. A point in case. We (my wife, child, and myself) were going out to the car the other day (within the last 3 days). We live in a one-way street. We found it difficult initially to get into our car because of the other car which was making a COMPLETE HASH of turning around (even though we were right by a sub-road that goes behind soem shops, which should have made the task as easy as PI). I must admit that, as the driver had his window open so that he could exchange instructions with his son, I decided to remonstrate briefly with the driver. I said, fairly loudly, "You do REALISE that this is a one way street - and it's THAT way???" pointing in the opposite direction to the direction he was trying to head in. To my extreme incredulity he shouted back "Yes - but look at the que!". Incredulously I replied "So it's not illegal if it's inconvenient to YOU??" and moved on, stunned. There was indeed a que at the extreme other end of our road, from which there is no earlier turn-off. However, bearing in mind the fact of (admittedly minimal) other traffic which this guy had to "dodge" going the wrong way for even so short a distance, I actually managed to get in the car, the kid into the child-seat, up passed the no-longer-blocked end of the road and out past the junction before this idiot driver had managed to get out of our road. I was both incredulous and furious. That's what people are like, myself included. If it's clear and easy enough - or a first pass is autoamtic and highlights suspect words - then maybe we'd use it. Maybe. But mostly, if it's any extra work we're most likely to assume that, hey, we're intelligent human beings. We can type. We KNOW we've typed poorly in the past, so this time (naturally) we'll type betetr and there'll be no need for the extra effort of spiel-checkign... we can avoid the extra werk and still produce prose worth of the Bard himself!
I've never seen a spell-checker on a server like the one Renderosity uses. It sounds like a good idea, but I have a feeling that it would be very difficult to implement, and would slow down the server quite a bit, as well as lead to more frequent server downtime and browser crashes. Besides, people are very forgiving. They're more interested in the content of your message than whether you follow the latest OED usage guidelines.
A Quick little tip for Mac users running the Safari browser, just right click or control click the text to bring up the spell checking menu, its a handy little underused feature.
Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

Hi I'm not getting at anyone in particular, indeed I'm one of the worst and English (British) is my native tongue. However how about a spell checker folks, a useful button under the message window to check the spelling of the created thread. I feel that this would be useful to thsoe (sic!)(Those) of us who think quicker than our hands can hit the keys but it would also be great for those of us who are not native to English I can't speak for other languages as the only other I have is a smattering of school boy French. So what do you think/ Dave
