"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Hi there igohigh, Since you've asked this in here, I guess you're interested in a modeling solution. :o) I don't have access to the programs you've mentioned above, but here's how I'd go about it in LightWave 3D. Above is a screen cap of the mesh in Modeler and a quick render with some material settings I have saved. I took a segmented box, then I rotated it diagonally (45). I then took my stretch tool to make the diamonds more pointy looking. I deleted the excess 4-point polygons and converted these to 3-point polygons so that they would be more rectangular. I then used a series of bevels to inset the thickness of the metal frame and give this some depth. I exaggerated it here, cause usually the leading for this sort of glass is only about 12mm. The glass and the window frame are pretty straight forward elements. Hope this helped. :o) Cheers! M

Ship Capatain's Cabin;I want to fill the square windows in with a Diamond shaped reinforced grid (like the green only thinner).
Originally I was thinking of just a simple flat and using a transmap but then I got to thinking (and boy did it hurt!) then I would only be able to use Transparency and not Reflection or Refraction as they will ignore the transmap and effect the steel grid as well.
So it looks like I will have to go ahead and bump up the poly count with a separate mesh for the grid but Im not exactly sure how to make it?
So far it is all done in Anim8or but I do have Ampi 4.15, TrueSpace 3, and Wings3d but not really sure how to use them yet.
Any suggestions, keeping the poly count as low as possible?
Oh, and one more question please:
