Subject: What are .sit files?

mmajor ( ) posted Sat, 19 July 2003 at 9:28 AM · edited Mon, 19 August 2024 at 7:46 AM

I am new to Poser I have the Poser 4 product, and I ready to jump in. I have now taken the step of downloading characters from Daz3d. In each of the downloads thus far I have recieved a .exe file and a .sit file. I know what the .exe file does and where it goes. However, I haven't a clue about the .sit file. Could someone either explain to me what's up with .sit file or send me link where I can get more information about this file? Thanks!

I believe the *.sit file is for Macintosh users.

Sit is the Mac equivalent of the zip format on Windows. It's a way to compress or archive files for distribution. Sometimes you may find free Poser file that is compressed with sit bya Mac user. You need an application to extract the files from the archive (link). Ironically, I just downloaded one for that very purpose :-)

.sit is not a "Mac" zip format. It is the format used by the archive/compression program StuffIt (thus, sit). It works both on Mac and Windows. It can be found here: AladdinSys Kuroyume

I should mention that there was a time when StuffIt was a Mac-only application. WinZip is still a Windows-only application, but StuffIt can handle .zip files just as well as .sit files. Things have changed. Kuroyume

Forgive my imprecision. ".SIT is another compression format similar in purpose to .ZIP files, though this format is used most often by Macintosh users. Utilities for extracting the contents of .SIT files can be obtained from Aladdin Systems."
