Subject: Rating and Voting

I find it really hard to "judge with my gut" and asign a rating to something, or to pick one entry out of a number of entries as my favorite. In frustration and my inability to make a "gut choice" inorder to vote in the Mojo challenge I came up with a rating system I could use for judging or rating pictures. I have (currently) six criteria: Technical, Emotional Impact, Focus, Details, Overall Composition and Genre/Style, and for each one I score a 0- has a problem, 1- no problems, 2- impressed me. For a total possible score of 12. A six means no problems that I saw, and that's a GOOD piece of work, 7-9 is GREAT and 10-12 is EXCELLENT. I suppose all those other possibilitis on the rating scale trail on down at one point per to a 0 rating a Hmmm. But the truth is that I haven't yet had the courage to actually give anyone a rating of less than excellent (I'm such a coward.) It seems to me that I could adapt this system for writing, and start actually RATING writing, instead of just making comments. Would people like that? Would a system like this be useful to anyone else out there? What do you all think should be included?

Personally, I hate rankings. Once a month or so, the Poser Forum has yet another "Ranks Rock/Ranks Suck" debate and I really have to agree with the Ranks Suck group. I always allow comments on my stuff and never put in ranking. I'd rather have a honest critique on my stuff - what works and what doesn't. I used to be a teacher and I don't have a burning need to go back to grading people's works. :) And, yeah, there's always the fear of someone getting into a snit because you lowered their ranking. (It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. That's why I stick to comments only.) :/ That's just my opinion, though, and other people here might be interested in a point system to get a more objective score. Cheers!

I, personally, don't fancy rating. A good 'fat' comment is all I want and usually all I give to the others. The other thing is that I don't like commenting or even ranting works I have not liked - this regards Poser Gallery. I would rather pass on silently than criticise. Why? I don't believe I could do better than that.

I find it practically impossible to give a good critique to something that I don't like. I have to like it on some level be able to see where it can be stronger. If I hate it it, I don't want to get that close to it. In writers I don't try to comment unless its in my genre, and if I do try to comment, but can't come up with both something complimentary and some useful hint, then I go away without saying anything. Sometimes I just skip the comment thingy altogether and IM them asking if they want a REAL critique. :) But the rating system is there. Someone must find it good for something? (Or maybe not.)
