Just created a new shader set for Anything Grooves by Digital Carvers Guild (www.digitalcarversguild.com) Combining C3's improved rendering with AGrooves creates some fun results... Mark

Mark, is this an HDRI rendering?

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Thu, 28 August 2003 at 5:45 AM

No, it uses Global Illumination plus two lights. The HDRI has it's best effects when used with reflective materials. This image does use the much improved Depth of Field camera filter though.

I was under the impression that all of the Digital Carver's Guild's plugins need to be updated b/f working in/with Carrara 3... Did you just install the AGrooves plugin into C3 or are you a beta tester? Just curious. mike

I have had the opportunity to see if an AG update plays well with C3... ;)

You are so lucky! The pix looks marvelous! The improved DOF really does look much better than previous versions. I have a feeling that September is going to be a busy and fun month ( release of C3 and maybe updates to DCG plug-ins). mike

Can you apply AG to imported objects? 3DS is what I mostly work with.

Yes.

Hi folks,

Here's another Carrara 3 image. This one uses Anything Grooves, Anything Grows, and Shader Ops.

Great pix, Eric. The ol' AGrows ivy is just looking better than ever (prob due to the better renderer in C). So is it safe to assume that the various DCG plug-ins are winding their way along the road to "work and play well" with Carrara 3? I can't wait, cuz, the DCG plugins are indispensible for me working in Carrara! I miss Gemini!!

MrMongo,

It is safe to assume, pretty much all we are waiting on to do a formal release is a retail build of Carrara and the final version of the SDK.

If you are a Gemini fan, I think you'll be really happy with the way Gemini works with C3. In C2 if you wanted to use subdivision surfaces and Gemini, you pretty much had to build the control cage using Gemini, use the Gemini command to convert it to a complete mesh and then apply the SDS. With C3's improved SDS, specifically the fixes to open polygons, you can turn on subdivision surfaces right away and it just works.

On the ivy, C3's renderer certainly helped. This is with the skylight on, but no indirect light. One other change is that instead of using a plane object as the tip, I use a grid mesh that I cupped slightly. It makes it so the leaves aren't perfectly flat.

[drool] Yea! The old open triangle prob is fixed in Gemini! Great to hear it, Eric! Cannot, just cannot wait for the whole suite of DCG plugins to be released for C3. C3 is just half the upgrade, the updated DCG plugins are the other half to complete this upgrade!
