Subject: OBJ file needed?

If you're zipping up the files for a prop or figure, does the OBJ file have to be included? I've noticed that some of the things I've downloaded include the OBJ file, while others don't.

depends. Some cr2's & pp2's contain the required geometry info, some reference an external resource file (that's like all the files in your Geometry folder). You can look at the file in a text editor and see if it has a path to an external file. Some people will include an obj file along with a Poser prop, even though Poser doesn't need it, just so folks who don't own Poser can use the model in another app. Most figures use common geometry files that either came with Poser or are addons (like Vicky & Mike). You didn't mention why you were zipping (backup or distribution) but if you didn't build the obj file, its most likely improper to redistribute it. Just trying to say that if, for example, you are distributing a Victoria character, don't include the obj file.

Thanks very much for your reply! "Some cr2's & pp2's contain the required geometry info, some reference an external resource file" Is there any way to control which it is? I built the models myself, and imported them into Poser and made them into a figure with parented prop. (Very simple ones.) I would like to post it to free stuff. Looking at the CR2, it looks like it is referencing the OBJ. There a couple of lines that say: I:Poser4RuntimeLibrariescharacterRandymToy Mouse.obj Obviously, I was testing it in a copy of Poser 4 on my I: drive. I guess I should move the OBJ to Geometries instead, but how do I get the CR2 to look there instead of on my I: drive? If I just delete that line, will it look in Geometries instead?

Props saved in Poser inclued the Geometry information, there is no need for the OBJ. To make an Prop with external geometry you have to hand edit the PP2. Figures saved in Poser use external geometry. I think you would have to include the OBJ for the figure, but not for the prop.

"I:Poser4RuntimeLibrariescharacterRandymToy Mouse.obj" Well, it's not a great idea to keep the .obj in the library folder. There are various reasons for this, not all of which are fully understood by me, but as I understand it, some versions of Poser will choke when they encounter this. Best place to put the .obj is in the Geometries folder, and to reference it so that it works on any machine (not just your ;-), set it up to have relative paths like this: :Runtime:Geometries:Randym:toy mouse.obj Obviously, you'd make a directory in the Geometries folder called Randym first ;-) To zip it all up, make a directory in the ROOT of any drive and call it Runtime. Make a Geometries folder, a Libraries folder, a Character folder under Libraries, etc. In other words, set up all the paths and folders as they would appear in a real Poser setup. Then zip it all up, making sure you keep the path information and so on. Test it once to make sure it all unzips the way you zipped it, and then people can just unzip to their Poser directory and stuff will fall right into place. :) bonni

One reason not to put the OBJ in the Library folder is that users probably won't want to keep it in the same folder (may not be able to keep it in the same folder if they are approaching the P4 folder limit) and they can't get rid of your folder without editing the CR2.

Thank you so much, everyone! That's exactly what I wanted to know. I spent hours searching the net last night, and found a lot of helpful info, but not the answers to these particular questions. The Renderosity Brain Trust comes through again! :-)
