"ALBANY (CBS) Steel salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center will be used to build the Navy's USS New York, a warship named in honor of those who perished in New York on September 11, 2001. The scrap steel will be extricated from the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island on Friday and trucked south to a Northrop Grumman shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. Northrop Grumman will start building the USS New York in Pascagoula in the middle of next year. The USS New York will be the fifth of 12 amphibious assault ships in the San Antonio class, which the Navy calls one of its most technologically innovative. The 684-foot vessel will carry a Navy crew of 402 and up to 800 Marines. The $800 million vessel should be ready for active duty in 2007. If the trade center scrap meets specifications, it will be melted down and used to configure the edge of the bow that cuts through the water, said Northrop Grumman spokesman Jim McIngdale. "We're very proud that the twisted steel from the WTC towers will soon be used to forge an even strong national defense," New York Gov. George Pataki said. "The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combatting terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11 and the course and strength New Yorkers showed in response to terror." " Anyone else thinking Ironic? In that basically a memorial for the victims on Sept 11th, is going to be inevitably used for killing innocent people. "The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combatting terrorism around the globe" Am i right in presuming that this ship wil lay dormant when the US operates for personal gains? "while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11 and the course and strength New Yorkers showed in response to terror"

I deleted my previous comment so this can stay on-topic & in the Bryce Forum, I'd like to see what the ship will look like in Bryce :)

i just dont get it:(

Svaelt ( ) posted Tue, 09 September 2003 at 10:10 AM

This is something I find typical for America. The mere thought is so stupid. (No offence to my American friends) Once again i find myself on your side, drac!

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 09 September 2003 at 12:10 PM

I'm sorry to have to find myself having to comment on this topic because the last thing I think this forum is about is national politics. In my mind this isn't the place for it. If I wanted to discuss politics and world events, I know there are plenty of places throughout the Internet where they would happily indulge me. If you want to submit and discuss an image or a model of the ship, that's one thing. To discuss the politics, that's entirely another. Just realize that your insensitivity to the feelings of others who may not agree with your ideologies has been noted. I for one was there that day. I felt the heat of the fireball intensely upon my face and the earth shake below my feet. I saw innocent people jumping, arms and legs flailing as they fell to their certain deaths. I lost 26 co-workers, all good family people. I watched with my own eyes, the north Tower crumble. Not knowing at the time I had lost a 49-year-old cousin in it, a widow with 3 children there, as I walked through the ashes of the south Tower which had already fell. Still, to this day, I cannot shake off those memories that will haunt me for the rest of my life. Dont talk to me about innocent people and what you think is right and whats wrong! I'm not interested in what you think from the sheltered safety of your home. Ill say no more about this topic. You want to discuss art, modeling, Bryce fine, but not your ideologies or your politics, they dont interest me.

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 09 September 2003 at 12:27 PM

Ideologies are opinions and opinions are like ass-holes, everyone has got one and everybody else's stink! Whether I agree with it or not is not the issue, this simply isn't the place for it because you don't know what other people feel or believe. I can't believe the insensitivity of people to the feelings of others. Like I said, if I wanted to discuss politics and ideologies, there are plenty other sites I can go to have my fill. I dont come to Bryce to discuss my politics and ideologies.

I wonder how long AS is going to let this continue?!

Quest, sorry for your losses on that day. And well stated post. Couldn't agree more. It seems America bashing is still going strong at R!

I think Drac went too far this time......what do you think? This is not the first time he's had an OT rant. Stick to 3D art, Drac. It's what you're good at....your mouth just isn't cutting it.... The Bryster

If I may make a small suggestion....not to intrude or to interfere, but.... As alot of you have said here, each of us is entitled to our opinions, sometimes they coincide, sometimes, we must agree to disagree... But if I may propose a suggestion to those who disagree.. How about not posting a reply if you do not agree, that only aggrevates the situation, moods, and tempers. Next thing you know, people are getting banned, posts getting deleted, and we go away mad for a few hours/days with a small rift beginning in a very nice and close knit family. Please, if You have comments, these things are much more suited for private messages, and yes, they do work... winks but like I said, is just a suggestion, and only my opinion. Jen

a Bryce model of the ship sounds like a great idea.

EricofSD ( ) posted Wed, 10 September 2003 at 1:31 AM

and as for the event, there's very little political about it. A group of human beings decided to kill another group of human beings. They did so not by choosing a military target, but by chosing ordinary every day people. The families, friends, and fellow citizens are out for blood and the ones who spilled it knew that before they started. Chose your sides. You either side with the wrongful victims or the evil that brought the atrocity. Those folks never did one lick of harm to the attackers. Its twisted thinking to hit civilians and then accuse their fellow nationals as being politically incorrect for stepping out and seeing to it that that those who condone such a thing never get a chance to follow in the footsteps of evil.

Svaelt ( ) posted Wed, 10 September 2003 at 6:36 AM

I totaly agree with you Drac, but they are right, this isn't the place for a political discussion. But still I want to thank you for posting this here. If you hadn't I wouldn't have gotten to read it.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Wed, 10 September 2003 at 11:14 AM

Do me a favor draculaz and don't model the ship. It would be an insult for all Americans and especially those who lost their life on 9-11.

Feel absolutely free to post wip's of your Bryce modeling in the Bryce forum, and even links in your wip posts to this thread here if you want, but the orignal post is of an OT subject. Being moved to OT. Thanks for understanding. AgentSmith
