Subject: Monthly Challenge concern...

Hey all! I'm in a dilemma about this month's challenge. I haven't attempted one in a while but I have a good idea for this one. The problem is that the image calls for a huge group of people (spectators) and my computer can't handle that many! I'm using Poser 2 Lo Business Man figure so that I wouldn't have poly OVERLOAD but it still fills up fast. I'm working on a Pentium II and was hoping you'd have some help as to how to work around the problem. NOTE: The attached photo is one of the actual event and it's the effect I'm trying to achieve.

Try putting the first few rows as poser figures, and then making 2D 'cutouts' of the rest.

Exactly, 2D faces/cutouts or composting them later is the best way to go when dealing with such numbers. AS

Check out Flak's tutorial on the making of "Siege". It's under the resources link.

Find the image of the crowd you prefer, use the 2D image on a terrain & use the image again to color or detail your terrain. That way you can shape & fit it in anywhere.

ICM, I tried that this morning and it just didn't work out the way I wanted it. Slakker and AS, I really like the cutout idea and I'll try that the next time I get onto Bryce!

'Is this the queue for the toilet?' 'Do you think this Titanic can hold all of us?' 'I knew Bryce 6 was gonna be popular, but Jeez...!' 'Siggraph Conventions gotta get better organised than this next year...' 'No, I'm here for the Bum & Titty Grader's job...' 'Yeah! I heard it on the 'Rend. I think the most accurate solution would be to make the crowd in smaller patches at a time and make maskrenders of them to composite later. If there's not going to be much detail on the individual people you might want to texture them with procedurals instead of 2D textures. That'll save you an incredible amount of memory.

Hi Bryster.................aren't wotsits a small cheesy snack? lol 8)

danamo ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 9:58 PM

Lol,Yes, I'm quite sure you're right catlin! The strange thing is, when I ask about them at the little tea shop domntown, the two nice expatriate Brits who run the shop look at me as if I'm quite mad. I've asked them to order some for me. I understand they come in all sorts of flavors, and they're all quite delicious.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 6:49 AM

Does that mean, if I flash my "Wotsits", you'd like some Dan? lol 8)

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 7:05 AM

BTW Dan, if you send me your address I'll post a box of multi flavoured Wotsits to you and you can make yourself sick with them. 8) Catlin
