Subject: Exporting Poser 5 to Bryce 5 Problem! HELP

isometric ( ) posted Sun, 12 October 2003 at 10:18 AM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 5:59 AM

I'm just wondering if anyone else has run into the same problem I have when trying to export Poser 5 Figures to Bryce 5 (Mac)? I Export it as a WaveFront OBJ, then try to import it in Bryce but for some reason it cannot locate Certain Texture files that Poser Uses. Here is an Example of one of the errors; "DonBodyTexLo.jpg Note: this fike has either been moved or deleted. Please locate it in the next Dialog." After closing the error Box Bryce unexpectingly Quits. I've opened the Poser folder and have found all the files that its looking for. I have no idea why Bryce cannot find those files??! Can anyone help me out here.? Thanks Adam

First, you must realize that Bryce wouldn't know where to look for an image file or texture if it was created in another program, that could be anywhere on your drive and Bryce doesn't know where. It looks to where it keeps its own materials and sees that the requested file isn't there and offers you the option to direct Bryce to it. Bryce isn't one of those high-end modeling programs that can be setup to follow any number of paths on your hard drive to where image and material files are likely to be kept. Second, don't just close the dialog, you should know where the files are located on your hard drive, direct Bryce to where the files are and it should continue to set up the scene for you. I agree, Bryce shouldn't just quite on you at this point but setup the scene without the found material, in default shading. And thirdly, just in case, make sure you've updated Bryce with the newest patch (I believe it's 5.1). cheers

Nah, it's not really Bryce's fault. It reads the .mtl file and looks where the file tells it to look. And since the path written into the mtl is donbodytextlo.jpg, Bryce looks in the same directory where the file is. Since there's no texture there, it asks you. (I don't see why it quits and really, be certain to download the paatch.) One way to remove the problem is to copy the texture into the directory where you saved the file. The texture is in Curious Labs -> Poser -> Runtime -> Libraries -> Textures -> and so on, since I don't know it by heart. Another way is to use MeTaL Fixer, which will put the file and texture in your root Poser directory. Third way, I guess, would be to use Grouper, but I have never used it. Both MeTaL Fixer and Grouper are free. http://www.castironflamingo.com/tutorial/grouper/index.html for Grouper http://www.fignations.com/jelisa/mtl/mtl_fixer.html for MTL Fixer. It even has a tutorial for P5 users

Grouper and MeTal Fixer are both PC only and Iso is using a Mac. I don't know of any Mac programs like these. I'm not getting a crash when asked to find the file using a 1.4 GHz G4/1gig RAM/ OSX 10.2.6 and Bryce 5.0.1 . Since Poser doesn't write the path at all, try putting the .OBJ and copies of the textures (with the original name!) in the same folder since that's where the .MTL is "pointing". HTH; Dan

Erlik, I just got MeTaL Fixer and tried it out. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Grouper is great, but this one has it beat, hands down! Thanks for the link! Mike

I like grouper and metalfixer, both are very useful. I have, however, gotten into the habit of exporting from poser without textures in the first place. Makes for quicker loading, none of the annoying finding of textures you speak of, and I'll be doing extensive rework of the textures anyway...straight from poser material settings look like crap in bryce. I use grouper to strip all the maps if there are any, import the model and turn it a nice neutral mat with the ambiance and diffuse values already set. From there I assign families and load the image map for each one(and tweek) as I go. That's just the way I like to do it....

There is going to be a Poser to Bryce class as LVS online. Classes are 6 weeks and cost under $25. I've signed up for this class. Peggy
