Subject: marketplace search bad as it ever was

have you done anything at all? >:( i just tried to find t-shirts for michael and i get loads of results that have nothing to do with search words, like faces for mike, clothes for vicky and so on... i tried everything: "michael t-shirt" "+michael +t-shirt" "michael AND t-shirt" "michael + t-shirt" etc, etc... always with same results! i thought you fixed the worst search engine ever encountered on commercial sites.

Try "tee shirt" instead. I came back with about 144 hits. Tim

tee shirt?? who's writing "tee shirt"? even the product name is "t-shirt". anyway, that's not my point: try searching for "tee shirts" for michael. what is the magic word? normally, either "+" or "AND" or similar.

aleks - I can only assume that the product you were looking for is "V-neck t-shirt for Mike" from you comments. That's probably why it didn't return at the top when you search for "michael t-shirt". However, if you just search the term "t-shirt" every item with t-shirt in the title returns in the first 3-5 pages depending upon the frequency and relevance of the term "t-shirt" in the product title and product keywords. While analyzing the search based upon your complaint it seems that the search is working very well. The search itself is based upon product title, product keywords and product description. Those products that contain the entered search phrase in the title and keywords should return higher in the search. Tommy

i was looking for all t-shirts for mike. i need(ed) one, none specifficaly - rather desperately. i don't want to have tons - ca. 900 hits - of t-shirts for vicky, textures for it, by-products for those etc, hence my question again, how do i search for t-shirts for mike? isn't it logical that i connect search words with an AND or +?

Actually if you just enter "Mike t-shirt" its the first item that returns. Unfortunately the merchant chose the name Mike instead of Michael. So that was probably what skewed your search results. "AND" is not a search operator. For a complete list of the operators and usage you can go to the link provided above and click the "Help" button. Thanks. Tommy

thanks, but i did it like this (see #1), that is why i'm telling you that it isn't working. with search term +mike +t-shirt i get that t-shirt but also load of other crap, like this: http://market.renderosity.com/softgood.ez?ViewSoftgood=11849 where's here "t-shirt"? with +michael +t-shirt i get undies for michael on the first page! i really think that you should use search standards here. it is almost impossible to find something unless you know it's exact name.

Granted there is a "gray" area when using hyphenated words in a boolean search. When you used "+mike +t-shirt", here is what is actually happening. +Mike: Mike must be present in every item returned +t: T must be present in every item returned -shirt: Shirt must not be present in any row returned (however "t-shirt" is interpreted as being different from "shirt"). So you actually got what you asked for. I understand the confusion - you were just fortunate enough to choose a search phrase that produces complicated results. Sorry. :) Tommy

Usually, boolean searches look for a space before any operators, at least in my experience. Perhaps R'osity can change the code to look for a space prior to any operators?
