*The first body was behind the door when we opened it. It was almost unrecognizable as having been human. It was literally a bloody pulp, as if somoene had taken a sonic disruptor coupled with a needler and went to town. Blood was literarlly everywhere, which was very disconcerting given that the body didnt look as if it could have belonged to anyone older then ten years old.
As we slowly made our way though the deserted cabin, the door we had entered in through slowly started to close, its hinges squeeking in protest as if they hadnt been used in a thousand years. The rest of the landing party just looked back at me, fear shining through their eyes as if they were spotlights in the dark of space. I just took a deep breath and nodded to each in turn and went back to exploring the cabin, hoping that the rest would do the same.
Sir, my second in command on this mission spoke up, I dont see the remains of any more bodies. Stating the obvious was this particular officers specialty.
The others in the group nodded in ascent. There was no evidence that any other bodies had ever even been here. It was just as if blood had been splashed everywhere. All we had in the way of bodies was the one that had been behind the door. Looking back at it, it somehow seemed different, as if something had changed. Frowning, I just shook off the feeling, attributing it to the difference in viewing angles. It had to be why it looked different. It had to be.
As we moved towards the back of the cabin, an ensign managed to find a secret entrance. Somehow, through all the blood and gore soaking every inch of every surface in the room, he managed to find a secret entrance. After a quick glance down the passage-way, our flashlights readily slicing the darkness, I took the lead and started down the passage-way, hoping that there was a light at the end of this tunnel. As I stepped in, I noticed that there were torches on the walls, set at 15 foot intervals from each other and in a stepped pattern.
Are you sure this is a good idea, asked the partys science officer, after all, we dont know what caused that bloody mess in the room behind us and we have no idea at all what is in this passage way and most definitly no idea of what is at the end of it. We could very well come face to face with the being that caused the carnage in the cabin.
I nodded, Youre right, and withdrew my blaster and set it to its maximum kill setting. I smiled as I heard everyone do the same.
An hour later we were still trudging down the hallway, the torches having long ago disappeared from the walls and still the end was no where in sight. Occassionally there would be the skittering of clawed feet across the rough hewn rock floor. I stopped as a shiver coursed through my spine.
Lets turn back, I suggested as I stopped walking forward. It had been the first words spoken since we entered the passageway. I know the end probably holds the key to the body in the cabin, but we do not have the resources necessary to confront something so apparently powerful. Everyone nodded in assent. Thats when everyone heard the growl. Because of the tunnels accoustics, we couldnt determing the origin, but it didnt matter.
Soon after the growl, the ground began to shake, almost as if the ground was going to split open and swallow us whole. The rumble slowly grew and a slight breeze kicked up the ancient dust. We all looked at each other and drew our weapons, quickly splitting up into two groups we faced down the passage-way in either direction. I put my back to the direction we had been walking away from. The tension built up exponentially in relation to the volume of the rumbling.
Suddenly the gorup behind me opened fire, moments later we opened fire too as some creature revealed itself, caterwailing as our blows were seemingly shrugged off, or even worse, absorbed. Just as suddenly as it had appeared, it disappeared and our blasts just started tearing into the nothingness the creature had left behind.
Turning back towardss the other group I saw a pile of rubble where once stood an open passage-way, and the way back home. Sighing, I sat down, back against the wall. Looks like we go forward, I looked at each crew member in turn. What had once been simple fear had turned into ajbect terror.
The story, of course, is not complete.
