Subject: Ok I give up! HOW do you setup multiple runtimes?

I keep reading about how great it is to have things setup that way, but I can't find anything to tell me how to actually setup the use. I figure I can install any new character/items into a different folder, but how do I switch to them while within poser5? do I have to do something to them before I launch poser or what?? Search previous posts didn't really offer any help, and google is worthless.. I just keep finding references on how this is a great new feature. Assistance? Did Geep do a tutorial on it?

set up your runtime. I suggest copying the 'downloaded' runtime already in your Poser 5 folder and renaming it. In Poser 5, open the library pallette. You want to be all the way at the top, with nothing open. You should see an icon marked 'Poser 5'. CLick on the plus sign at the bottom of the screen to link to a new runtime. Browse to the runtime you want, and say ok. Now your library should have two icons "poser 5" and "yourfolder". Just be careful ... injection poses need to be in the same runtime as the injection folder

Add a new runtime by clicking on the + at the bottom of the library palette. Then browse to the folder you want to add. Basically, it's the same way you'd add anything to the library. Only you start at the very top of the library structure (where you see the "Poser 5" folder"). That's where you add runtimes to the library.

Open your P5 library and click the "up" arrow until you reach the uppermost level, you see a Poser 5 folder with a red dot on it (that is, yes you guessed it, your Poser 5 runtime) and a "Downloads" folder (that is a folder Curious Labs has created already as an extra runtime in the Poser directory). The red dot indicates your currently active runtime. Scroll down and you wull see a small "plus" sign. Click on it, and you are prompted to locate your new runtime on your disk. Once you have done that, it will appear with the other two folders above, and you can select it as your active runtime at any time.

hmmm.. looks like a few ways to describe the same system. Thanks for the replies, guys! Did I MISS that this was somewhere in the manuals, or what?

To add to the above:

You can make a new runtime by simply making a new folder with any name you want, and then making a single subfolder within it named "Runtime". When you click the "+" sign in the top level of the library palette, and browse to this new runtime and add it, the name of the folder it is within will be added as a new runtime in the library palette, and all the other "standard" folders will automatically be created within it.

If you use any DAZ figures, make sure to always copy the !DAZ folder over to the default/original P5 runtime.

I also find that it is beneficial to copy ALL geometries to the default runtime, maintaining the folder structure from the item creator. A lot of packages seem to point directly there for object files or textures, and it is a pain to have to tell P5 where to find the .obj files every time - not to mention that everyone uses different naming conventions and subfolders, so .obj's can be hard to find. I suspect that some file could be edited to point to the custom runtime for these, but I don't have that level of expertise yet.

I REALLY wish that when P5 comes up missing a file, it would just use Windows' own built-in search function, or at least allow me to use it to find the missing file!

Yes! Instead of scanning through 5 gigs of information to say "Hey, your file ain't here! What are you gonna do about it?" EVERY SINGLE TIME it can't find something. Maybe this multiple Runtime thing will help that...

when you say copy the Daz folder over do you mean poser4/ runtime/libraries/figures/Daz people and just paste it into the Poser5 runtime?? sorry if this is sily question just want confirmatuion before I do anything. Linda

Marque, when you add a new Runtime, it takes its name from the folder above the Runtime folder in question. So if you want to add a Runtime located at c:MarqueRuntime you will point at the folder Runtime when prompted in Poser. The new runtime will then be named "Marque" automatically in the library. Linda: If you are referring to Drew2003's post, I think he refers to the folder named !DAZ in the Libraries folder. This folder contains files used by the Injection Poses that comes with V3 and M3. Those files are better kept in the original Poser 5 runtime, since the Injection Poses has a problem finding them in a remote runtime. Furthermore, these files never show up in the library anyway, they are only called upon by the Injection Poses. The folder "DAZ people" contains the actual DAZ figures, those can be located anywhere and in any runtime.

Further point re: DAZ Inj/Rem It seems to me to be best to keep these in the original Runtime/Poses folder. I tried putting all the Vickey 3 mats into a new folder under "runtime/poses", and it works OK until you try "inject all" - then you get the "go make coffee while Poser looks for file" syndrome for EVERY SINGLE MAT! (sheesh - 3 - finger jobbie..) I haven't sorted out my runtimes yet, I'm working on a cunning plan, but haven't got it sorted in my head yet. That's my pennyworth done, cheers, Diolma

Diolma, if you copy the !DAZ folder to the main runtime, you should be able to put Vicky 3 in another runtime if you want. The same applies to M3, the Freak, SP3, etc. - any DAZ figure with injectable morphs. The !DAZ folder must be copied over the main Poser 5 runtime, or it will take forever to inject the morphs. And don't forget to copy the !DAZ folder over again, each time you apply an update for any of your DAZ figures. :-)

@randym77: Randy - I haven't created ANY new runtimes yet. I left the !DAZ folder where it was (under Runtime) What I did (and this is NOT recommended, as I found out) was to copy all of the V3 MATs into a new folder under (the original) Runtime/Pose 'cos there were all these folders at the top level for all the different MAT types and it took ages to scroll thru them (get Stephanie Petite and it gets worse) So I created folder "Poser 5/Runtime/libraries/poses/V3 stuff" and moved all of the Inj/Rem stuff there. All is OK if I just want to inj/Rem a single MAT. BUT if I try to use the "Inj All": coffee time - because the scripts say //Begin All Body Morph Injection. // All Chest-Breast readScript ":Runtime:Libraries:Pose:!V3 Chest-Breast INJ:AreolaBig.pz2" readScript ":Runtime:Libraries:Pose:!V3 Chest-Breast INJ:AreolaOut.pz2" readScript ":Runtime:Libraries:Pose:!V3 Chest-Breast INJ:BreastDroop.pz2" .... (and believe me - there's a lot of file references inb there..) So Poser looks for them in "Runtime/libraries/Pose", NOT in "Runtime/Libraries/Pose/V3 Stuff/" (where I moved them to). doesn't find them and goes on looooong hunt... for EVERY one! So. It seems to me to be best to keep all the DAZ stuff in the same directory (probably the original Runtime/libraries/Pose directory) and move EVERYTHING else out into another runtime :-)) This only applies if you ever want to use the "INJ all or REM all" MAts - otherwise, everything is OK.. I'm still working on how I want to sort things...

Diolma - it sounds like you don't have the V3 service release installed. The SR fixed the inject/remove all files so that they search the main !DAZ folder (under libraries) instead of the Pose folders. You can get the SR on the V3 product page at Daz.
