"NEW YORK - This is an era of gender equality. In some households, it's the women who wear the pants. Why, then, aren't more men showing off their gams in skirts? The problem is that in recent history there has been a feminine connotation linked to the skirt, even though men had worn them for centuries, according to Andrew Bolton, associate curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Men feel if they wear it (a skirt), their masculinity will be called into question. But if you've even seen a man in a skirt, the first thing you think of is male genitalia," he said. Roman gladiators, for example, proudly displayed their legs for all to see in short, skirted suits of armor as a sign of their virility. Bolton organized the newest exhibit at the Costume Institute, "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts," which opens Tuesday and runs through Feb. 8, 2004. French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who has been known to send a men's skirt or two down the runway, is the sponsor." ********************** The exhibit is going to feature papal robes, sarongs, grass skirts, kilts, caftans, Greek and Hungarian traditional clothing... as well as some of the modern protest stuff. It ought to be eye-opening as well as educational! Carolly

And if you are wondering what this has to do with Poser... well, wizards didn't wear neatly-cuffed trousers! I've got a male sarong and a couple of kilts in my files. I don't yet have an Arab-styled caftan or abba (think of the white one worn of Lawrence of Arabia, or something suitable for the 1001 Nights) nor do I have a really good cassock or medieval scholar's gown. Yet. Carolly

hmmm... that's food for thought. Dave

There's a male kaftan, alchemist's robes, tunics, kilt, monk's habit and preist's robes at Poserworld, Carolly. Many thanks for the link!

STNG had a "skant" at one time on the show, but gradually phased it out for some reason. Dave

I'm not supposed to post a preview yet, but for Carolly, anything... Here's my first (really), for sale project. It should be done within a couple of weeks. Is this the kinda of thing you were looking for?

pdxjims ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 9:17 AM

BTW, there's a ton of different draping morphs on the skirts to mix and match, as well as shorten and flare morphs.

LonCray ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 9:34 AM

Having just worn my kilt to work for H'ween, I'll be looking for a Poser kilt soon.

Very nice work, pdxjims!

HaiGan ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 10:19 AM

I'm embarassed for forgetting pdxjim's freebie men's robes, which are very nice. Those marketplace items look lovely (please don't boot them for being in the wrong forum, admins!).

Well, it's about time, is all I can say. I've always been of the mind that if we women can wear whatever we want whenever we want, the guys should have the same right. Only fair, doncha think? Kate

Dave ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 11:16 AM

It's not so much as being "allowed", but a matter of ego or question of masculinity. We men can be so afraid of our masculinity being in question that we'll stear away from any such possible scenerios. Old fashioned I know. New century, time for a new concept... Dave

Pdx is responding to a request ...thats perfectly okay. And I can attest that the morphs on the skirts are amazing

Here's a neat one I found. Wonder what it would take to make it into a decent conforming clothing item? Dave

So..... the rest of the world is finally ready to admit that us scots were right all along? LOL. Ah well, it was only a matter of time... Now, where did I put that sporran? mac

LonCray ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 2:56 PM

I tell you what, my kilt is verruh comfortable. Everything's nicely ventilated, and I can wrap it up around me if I get cold. It's a sleeping roll, a tent, and a blanket all in one piece of clothing. The added bonus is that my sporran makes carrying keys and wallet and stuff easier than pockets.

w0w Dave I like that one!!!! a man in a skirt or kilt is rather appealing to me .. after all I did marry a Scottish man. ;o) --Essie

Charlie_Tuna ( ) posted Tue, 04 November 2003 at 5:37 PM

I kilt may be nice in warm weather but I still be thing about me me pants for the colder weather like we get during michigan winters, a cold wind coming up under the kilt might get some parts rather cold and cause a reduction in size :-)

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.

By the end of a summer of Norman-period historical re-enactment, it's seeing men in trousers that starts seeming odd to me. :)

lhiannan ( ) posted Wed, 05 November 2003 at 8:09 PM

People can wear whatever they please... I just don't understand the desire to wear a skirt. I hate them and avoid them at all costs.

PandaPride ( ) posted Thu, 06 November 2003 at 9:55 AM

lol a man in a skirt, to think like a perverted man, this woman would say "easy acess(SP?) "

kingkyle ( ) posted Mon, 10 November 2003 at 6:32 PM

i would wear my kilt often for the wee problem that im in the netherlands and prefered mode of transport is the bike.... now i dont have a prolem with that just the wee lil ole ladys tend to get a lil scared at the sight if a man in a kilt cycling towards them flash.. pedal ..flash .. pedal... flash.. pedal and thats not even talking about a windy day, then theirs these dafties that buy them fake one layer kilts.... i want to see one of then do a twirl and not have it ride up!!! HA! oh..one should NEVER pick up a coin when walking in the park... dogs have cold noises..... if ya lucky but with all that kilts have a certail liberating feeling and i dont just been the dangles. all in all UP with the kilts... in the metaphorical sense that is.... would want to scare those wee ole ladys again Kyle
