Subject: What have I doing wrong? Please help!

Hi,

I have created a bumb map for Poser 5 Don. After I have rendered the figure I have some holes in the texture (look at the enclosed picture).

What have I doing wrong?
Can anybody help me?

Your bump setting is way too high (by a decimal point). Try something between 0.010000 and 0.030000.

Try plugging it into the Gradient Bump instead. I can't remember but I THINK it can sometimes give better results :o)

I wondered about gradient bump too. Also.... This is a question to all the artists and texture makers on Renderosity. Would a negative of your bump map be a better image to use? A similar issue about bump settings came up in an earlier thread, and I'd love to hear if there is a general consensus about the bump settings which are used in Poser 5.

You meanI shoul lighten my bumb map a little more? The bum is constructed by myself. I use Photoshop I have "turn around" the picture, made it greyscale and at last i made it RGB. Sorry for my bad english I hop you understand. Can you give me instruction how to make a bumb with a texture?

Looks like the bump is too strong and creates holes, try plugging it into displacement, set strenght to 0.006, and set minimum displacement in the render settings to 0.006 also. Mungo

how i bump and gradient bump different? also when i use displacement even at a very low value, any surface where a shadow is cast on by poser lights, that surface shows shadows that look like checkerboard patterns. what happens in some cases is that the whole surface also looks like a checkerboard even on the areas without shadows. please advice.

Gradient Bump in P5 is NOT a bump creation process at all - it is a "layer" which is luminance multiplied with the underlying material. In other words, it mixes the luminance values in the *.bum map with the luminance of the texture, creating the APPEARANCE of highlights and shadows but they are NOT responsive to your scene lighting. If you look at a *.BUM file you will note that it is just an "EMBOSSED" image like you can make in most paint programs. Poser uses that luminance information and discards the color information to create the illusion of bumps. This is not the same thing as real bump mapping which IS responsive to your scene lighting. Knowing this you can do some interesting things with the Gradient Bump node in P5 (such as apply body hair, skin blotches, freckles, etc to any texture (provided you only need the luminance channel to create your effect because color information in this node is ignored). So if you want bump mapping from an image that is NOT a pre-embossed *.BUM file, you MUST use either displacement or the regular P5 Bump Node and NOT the Gradient Bump Node.
