Subject: Can Photoshop convert jpg to bump?

beonalert ( ) posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 2:24 AM · edited Tue, 29 October 2024 at 4:42 AM

Is it true that Photoshop can convert jpg to bump files that can be used in Poser? If so, does anyone know what the process is? Thanks!

GraphicConverter (Mac) can do it, but Poser can do it as well, so why bother?

Well, I'm having problems with a particular jpg to bump conversion with my JADE character. There is one jpg it just won't convert. i don't know why.

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 2:24 PM

I just looked at the Photoshop 7 help index, and the keywords bump or bum don't appear in the context of bump maps. If you don't have GraphicConverter, then try resaving the jpg as tiff in some app like Photoshop or PSP. Maybe there's some problem with the original jpg that Poser can't handle. Like it's over 4096 square or it's progressive or it's corrupted somehow.

Open the suspect JPEG in PhotoShop and re-save -- even, re-save as PICT. Then point Poser to it again and let Poser do the conversion to BUM.

Oops. Sorry, mateo. I didn't read your post closely enough. Like he said!

Hey, no sweat, nomuse! If we said it twice, then it MUST be true!

Someone posted a Photoshop action to do this at PoserPros. I don't remember who or which forum.

Do you want to have a .bum extention or just make a Jpeg into a bump map....If you have Poser 4 that will convert jpegs into .bum....But if you want a bump.jpeg...for poser pro and up....well first of course load your jpeg then go to IMAGE-MODE-GRAYSCALE then go to IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS-BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST then adjust Contrast between +38 to +42 then go to IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS-INVERT and that's it, now your jpeg is a bump map you can use in poser:)

beonalert ( ) posted Sat, 27 December 2003 at 2:39 PM

Actually, the problem I am having is that Poser doesn't seem to properly convert the .jpg files to bump files for use with my Jade character. Poser WILL convert other .jpgs with no problem, but there is something about the Jade files that it doesn't like. It will prompt me to convert, and then it will go through the motions of converting, but it never actually creates a .bum file. I hate to spend $30 on an image converter program when I shouldn't have to.

nomuse ( ) posted Sat, 27 December 2003 at 3:36 PM

GraphicConverter is shareware. But I betcha you will send the $30 after trying it. Oops. That's the Mac ap. I don't know what you PC people use.

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sat, 27 December 2003 at 6:42 PM

You could have someone else give it a try with Poser.

beonalert ( ) posted Mon, 05 January 2004 at 12:40 PM

GraphicConverter is shareware? When I went to the site, it looked like you HAD to register for $30. Maybe I misread the terms. I got the link via Rabbit Hole. Is there another link I should try?

Hi there, I'm the one who wrote the Photoshop 6 Action. You can get it at Poser Pros (http://www.poserpros.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6380). Also in that thread I explain how the action works. Chris Cox
