Subject: Big can of worms: re-organizing pose and figure libraries...

tedbragg ( ) posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 7:49 PM · edited Mon, 04 November 2024 at 8:53 AM

Anybody with broadband and a perchant for binging on the freebies here know my pain: I've got HUNDREDS of pose libraries and alot of figure libraries I simply can't stand wading through anymore. Is there an EASY way to organize these things? Aside from digging into the Runtime and overhauling it? I'm a bit skeered to do this, since I've gotten a number of MAT pose files for texturing...and I don't want to screw them up by shuffling stuff around. Help? Any apps (PC or MAc) that can faciliate this?

P4 or P5? I've just gotten P5. So far I've installed everything to the default folders, but over the next week or so I'm gonna reorganise them in logical categories. First off, I'll delete all the P4 (non PP) specific folders and references, then split the rest up manually. V2 characters, V2 poses, Clothes MATS Har MATS, and so on. I'd rather do this manually than trust an app to know what I'm thinking of. :)

WEll, I went through and started shuffling stuff around, deleting what I didn't want, etc. So far so good. I'm on plain vanilla P4, so no trouble with multiple runtimes and such. I've yet to hit the Mat pose files...keeping my fingers crossed...

Tip for you... Copy the whole of Runtime to another folder outside Poser. Call it something like "Runtime Save" or whatever. Then, when you screw up (and you will), you'll be able to restore things relatively painlessly. As for MAT poses, they are only poses, same as any other. As long as they can find the textures, they will work fine. FWIW, you could even stick 'em all in the Camera folder if you rename the extension to .CM2.

I went through and re-organized the whole thing. Much better. Thanks for the CM2 tip...I'll have to try that one out!

Which is EXACTLY how I have mine organized since I went to P5. I tried multiple runtimes but my aging gray matter got confused. :)

All I can tell you from my findings posting a very simular post elsewhere is that Poinsettas go in the 'Shrubs' folder. It is NOT a flower but really a plant posing as a flower therefor it is a Shrub... oh, and I like all my MATs in the Camera folder too. great little donation-ware app for renaming all those buggers here: http://www.herve-thouzard.com/therename.phtml

I've done a system for myself in Poser 4 PP whereby I add a prefix on the name of each new character, prop or pose as I get them so similar type things group all together in their respective library sections.
For example all clothing figures or props I add Clo_ as the prefix, Arch_ if it has to do with buildings, P_ if its a pose, V2_, M2_ ,Clo_etc. in front of relevant MAT poses. It's simplified my insanely full runtime enormously.

Things I don't use a lot I keep in a 'holding runtime' just to make space in the main one.

I would hate an organising app to do this for me ! I always install things on my Mac manually. Can't find where those pesky Daz VISE installers even put new things half the time .
