Subject: Import/Export Problems from wings into bryce

(posted in wings forum too...lol) I've been working on that grandfather clock again, and with the latest additions to it, I can't seem to export it, and import into Bryce. This is the first time i've had this problem with it, and i am not doing anything different then i usually do...I add to the file, save as a wings file, then export it as default settings as a .3ds file. Only this time, when i import into bryce, i get an error... a i/o bad media error. Is there a max file size allowable for a .3ds export? or is it just a system thing? The file isn't that huge, like 3.5 mb or so, and not realy that many polygons or anything.. Anyone had this happen and know of a solution? Thanks Jen

filesize is not a problem, neither is polygon count. I have exported 80,000 polygon, 10 mb files before.

BUT: any single part of the model has to be under 64000 polygons. All together can be 150000 (yep, I have such) or much more, but an individual part must not pass the limit. Or it can simply be a bug with that particular model. Or can be a different problem. I've had models mapped in LithUnwrap get I/O error, while the same model imports fine unmapped. Possibly something with joining the polygons or whatever.

ahhh..I've had models up to about 1.5 meg, they get a little 'jerky' in Wings, but export ok..yeah, there's several versions of Wings out there, an upgrade (or even downgrade) could be the thing..have you tried .obj?..they work just as well as .3ds, and don't have to have the '-90 attribute' fix..and can carry uvmapping info as well..

Ok, in case this makes a difference... I have version 0.98.15a and am afraid to upgrade..lol The parts that were in question, i.e. the new stuff, all exported well, and imported well seperate....BUT as a group, would NOT import. combined polygon count on that group was 45,552. After I "seperated" that one group (which i hoped to keep together for texturing purposes) it imports fine, with no errors. althought now that it's finally rendered, i'mnot too sure i like the new decorations that well anyway...lol

well, i remember reading somewhere along the way that one of the newer versions didn't have this or that..one of those bugs, or exclusions, was that the keyboard shortcuts didn't work... and i LIVE on those shortcuts...LOL it's so bad that i take a model into bryce and try and control right click or use the scroll wheel to zoom.... LOL i know...it's bad... hahahahha Jen
