Anybody know how to convert a Poser .bum file to a standard greyscale image for use in another 3D program? Thanks

change the bum extension to bmp or jpg & do the greyscale conversion from there. in fact PSP will read native bum files if you set up the association, then all you have to do is open them, do the greyscale & then 'save as'

A .bum is actually a .bmp file.

Does this work if a JPG-File will be renamed to a BUM-File. That would be interesting about the file-size. I will give it a tray this evening. SHARKEY

You may be able to open the .bum file by renaming and changing to a grayscale image, but that is not sufficient. The original has a lot more detail visible than the renamed and re-grayscaled bum image. If you look for example at the original bump maps supplied with Poser and then look at the same files after they are converted into .bum maps, you will see a great deal of difference. It looks as if there is some sort of embossing involved in the conversion, and I have no found any way to reverse this process. Erich

There is no way to reverse the process to my knowledge. The original luminance information is lost and only the edge transitions are retained, with the luminance determining the amount of offset for the emboss effect. Portions of the original image that were 100% white will be represented with the same color value as portions that were 100% black. -- Not enough info retained to unscramble that egg. Here's another post with some additional info regarding how Poser detects the edges: CYMK & BUM conversions
