Okay, I'm looking at possibly buying either M2 or M3 to make some clothing for (for marketplace)...What I am wondering is which do most use, or which would be best..I can only afford one of them.

If you buy M3 you'll get a version of M2 that allows you to use teh M3 face morphs, so you're almost get both figures in one package. That was you'd be able to make clothes for both M2 and M3. Personally I only use M3 but that's because I the first male figure I bought was M3 - so far the only clothes I've bought are for M3. Hope this helps a little.

M3 for me. But I do think there's still a big crowd that uses M1-2. I've noticed many clothing modelers making a version of the same product for both 2nd and 3rd generation DAZ people.

Nevermore is right. If you buy M3, you'll get M2's body, too. So you'll be able to make clothes for M3, M2, and M1 if you buy M3. (Since M1 can wear M2's clothes.) So M3 is the way to go, I'd say.

Glad to be of use. :-) You'll need the M3 base and the M3 body morphs, if you're making clothing. Since people generally expect some morphs in the clothing. You probably won't need the head morphs, at least not for making clothing. Unless you need to start right now, you might want to wait for a coupon or a sale. DAZ offers as much as 50% off during their periodic sales.
