Subject: Voting

Hi, no, nothing about lenses this time ;) (Michelle, i've heard that sigh from over there :-)) I'd like to know, what this voting is all about. Couldn't find out .. sorry, i'm sure the info is there somewhere, just can't find it. Or is it really just being able to sort the images by the number of votings they got? And, i'd like to ask, if it would be possible for the tech-guys, to limit voting on one vote per day. I do have the impression, that voting increases that much the last week, it will soon be as useless as ranking already is. A great day to all of you! :) Tom

hi Tom... good topic... you'll never see me comment "vote" seems like this is something new being said as a way of a big compliment but i think it is rather a personal matter i do vote, & most of the time it's only once a day for me, that is if i remember now, Michelle, correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe that is how images get into the "Hot 20" by an averaging of "votes" lately the Hot 20 has been looking pretty good in the past you'd wonder how some of the photos ever got in there & it can be manipulated i guess by having "friends" vote & users with multiple names but that seems rather desperate hope that sheds some light on the big "V"

Thanks Cindy. I'm starting to see the light g. If you'd be so kind to point me to that "hot 20" ... can't remember to see something like that ... or is this the thing, Misha is doing? Still confused somewhat ... ;) As a compliment, the vs are great .. me thinks. But where's the use of them, if i do give a dozen per day? Of course, one cannot force the people to limit themselfes without the tech-guys .. and even that will not help for all that friends and the like as you've said .. but if someone needs that ... hmmm, sad but funny, isn't it? hugz, Tom :)

I don't comment everyday but yesterday for example I commented a lot of photos and today I wanna comment more ebot's of uploads of my favs which I haven't commented yet. Also I voted for the photos that I liked without the word "vote" in the comment. Some photos that I voted are in the hot20 like yours Raven and Cyn and some photos aren't in the hot20 but I considered them very good, like the two last uploads of Michelle for example. I think that the limitation to one vote is not practical because when do I decide which image deserves the vote? And I'm sure that after voting for one image I'll see other image that I like to vote for it. For example, yours (Thomas and Cyn), which is better? Are different photos and I like both in their styles and I vote both.
About the users with multiple names I think that this is a problem of Renderosity and I wrote about this in other threads and I proposed solutions, but anyway they are cheating themselves.
Thomas, I think that the limitation of one vote/day in the hot20 implicates to decide what image deserves it, and this decision is difficult because as I said the images are very different.
I valuate my images for the viewings, comments and votes. Yesterday I uploaded an image, I saw a few comments (btw Cyn, thanks for your comment) and no votes, and in my interpretation the image isn't good as I thought but I liked and appreciated especially the comments.
Now the votes are absolutes, but with the limitation they will be relatives to other images uploaded the same day. For this: let me to vote for the images that I like without limitations.

Raven_427 ( ) posted Thu, 22 January 2004 at 7:31 AM

@Cyn: thank you very much .. never noticed that link ooops @Francesc: Of course, you're absolutely right in what you're saying. If there are 3 excellent pics, by all means, they all should get their well deserved vote. But you're none of the average user, nor is Cyn as you're thinking about what you really like. It's the image you vote, not the user. Sorry if anyone feels offended ... Btw.: a voting from you is something i'm very proud of .. hey, you didn't see my smiling after reading your comment! Please don't get me wrong, this is not about me getting votes ... i'm (by now g) not good enough to be next to enax, cynlee, michelle, davidhate, dholman, logiloglu and some others ... and that's the kind of quality i'd like to see after clicking on "hot 20".

The Photography hot 20 has never been a disappointment to me, I discovered it about a month ago, there are always images of excellent quality on there, and I do agree the vote should be for the image and not for the artist. But as far as limiting the votes? As Enax stated, I really don't think there should be a limit on votes, simply because of the excellence I have seen in this gallery on any given day (and yes there is more then one excellent image uploaded at any given time). I only vote when I see an image that is of exceptional quality, and I don't always type in the word "VOTE" either when I do vote. Matter of fact until recently, I never voted, as I had no clue what it was either, so no worries Tom, you were not alone in that category. As far as rankings go? I also do not believe that they are totally useless, there are a lot of excellent images out there that do not necessarily warrant a vote. If I do not feel an image is of "excellent quality" I do not rank it as being excellent. I guess it is all just a matter of preference, if everyone had the same taste, it would be a very boring world. Just my two cents! :)

cynlee ( ) posted Thu, 22 January 2004 at 10:48 AM

oh, now Francesc... just because you do not see the word"vote" doesn't mean it was not good enough to be in the top 20... saying "V" is just too easy, i suppose it does encompass all the words in saying "this is an exceptional shot, everything about it is perfect, subject matter, technically skill, the feeling it evokes"... wouldn't you like to know just what it is that makes it so exceptional then just seeing the word "vote"?, it's the gut reaction that i'm after & Tom, do not underestimate yourself, you are more then "good enough"!!! & Nilla, it's good to hear your opinion on the subject :] votes can not be limited to one a day... it's those works that absolutely take your breath away, the ones you'd want hung on your wall (you should see my studio walls, oh... you can't... hehehe) :D

Fantastic job answering this cynlee!! I appreciate your help.... :~) Yep, everything cylnee said is very correct, the votes determine the Hot 20... There was a point in time going back about 2 years ago that the Hot 20 was a bit of a joke.... I still see the questionable image in there once in a blue moon (rarely these days), but I have to say that the Hot 20 has come a long way! In my eyes it really is a pleasure to pop in there and see what's about. But please do not think that just because your image is not in the Hot 20 that it isn't a worthy image! As far as leaving the v thing in comments, yeah,.... I've been guilty of it a couple of times.... when an image literally blew me away, but usually I just vote quietly, on those images that I think are exceptional..... I've decided that I wasn't going to do it anymore like that because I felt it's a bit like saying "I'm voting for you so go vote for me".... not that this is why people do it, but I just felt uncomfortable myself.... The ranking system I am uncomfortable with, and I never allow it on my images, and I don't rank anyone elses work. Why? Well all I ever see are "excellents", and maybe the occasional "great", even on images that clearly are not excellent or great.... shrug I don't know, I think people are afraid of being honest..... I know I don't feel very nice giving someone a Needs Improvement, while everyone else is giving Excellent and telling the member how wonderful. Usually in cases like this I don't leave a comment at all... So I avoid the rankings like the plague.... get prepared to duck from the flying tomatoes

I am, therefore I create.......

stepping in front of Michelle, trying to catch the tomatoes That's right what i think about ranking (we had that once) ... But it's not only the people being afraid to be honest, it's also other people being not able to get critique. Getting some ugly replies is a sure way of never giving unwanted critique again. Have a great day .. weeeeeekend is near sigh Tom :)

Hmm, everybody pretty much said what I would have. However I will throw my two cents in. lol I rarely visit the top20. There are so many great photographers in their own right and to pick one over the other would be difficult. I feel it's all about how the photographer percieves their work. i.e. My latest post "The Legacy" was torn apart at another photo site (no skin off my back) because it didn't fit in the photography do's and don'ts guidelines. It's not about what others think, it's all about how you feel about the image. What one may think is good another may not, it's always a matter of opinion and taste. Many great artists and photographers do not color or stay in the lines and their works are brilliant, let's be individuals. Anyway, so the point being, I could care less if my photographs make it into the hot20, that doesn't justify me as a photographer or artist. Sure it's nice, but it can be distracting. It's all about how I feel, If I'm happy with it, then that's all that matters. I'm more inspired by being surrounded by great photographers in this gallery then if I get a vote or not. I don't know if I'm making sense or not. lol. The bottom line is: It's not about the Hot20, it's about sharing, learning and opening our eyes to a whole other world. You all have been the best and I look forward to continuing with you all in this new year!! Now let's run out there and shoot away! ~big grin~

awwwe mel :] you'll always be in my hot 20 i sure am glad you're with us hugz

enax ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 12:45 AM

I agree with Michelle's words in fact. I was thinking that the hot 20 was more impartial, now I have doubts. Also I remember the last summer and the best rankings was important for me but now I think that in the next spring my photos will not be in the best rankings anymore. Nothing to say about the "Top 100 Most Viewed" perhaps the title could be the "Top 100 nudes". About the "Top 100 Most Commented", as the best rankings, in the next spring no more photos mine. And now we have another TOP in the forum and in the Community page the "Misha's TOP", I don't know the criteria of Misha but is evident that he don't like my photos. If the latest week of the next March I wanna see one image mine in all these tops I only would see the banner. :)) Does this mean that my photos aren't good?... Maybe, but I like them. Despite that my last two images are in the top20 and in the best ranking (for the moment), what really matter to me are the comments, not the number of comments, but what the comments say. Anyway, I like to see them in the hot20, and objectively I try to valuate the top 20. And, for example, one photo that the 60% of the comments are votes or he 18% of the viewings are votes is just incredible.

cynlee ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 2:26 AM

oh ppppppppht! :p francesc, your work is the tops, no matter what... now i feel bad cuz i have so many in the commented & ranked that are not as good as what i've been seeing & certainly not near the callibre as yours... i have no right to talk... at least i draw the line at posting myself nude :/ so you won't be seeing me in the most viewed... thank goodness :D & misha does a wonderful job, i'm sure it musta been an oversight... he can't squeeze them all in...

lejimi ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 2:37 AM

There are many answers here, bur I will say my word. I never allow ranking on my photograph, because I don't think such a thing could be "numbered" When looking at a picture, I usually rank it, never "excellent" because I think it doesn't exist (except in some Mile Davis records) and often great because if I go to see the picture, it's that the thumbnail looked good to me. So I rarely follow the link to a picture that disapoint me... However, I think it can be useful to "level" such work as a picture or a painting. If we come to show some here, it's a way to ask : do you think it's valuable ? Does it move someone ? Did I succeed in making you feel this or that ? How to make it better next time (@ Michelle : every photo "needs improvement") ? Hope I made the schmilblick going on.

enax ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 2:51 AM

Hi Cyn, I like your photos and you are one of my favs. I didn't say this of the Best Rankings for you. I prefer the best rankings now as they are as how they were before. Sorry because this wasn't my intention and you know how I appreciate you and your work. I don't post photos in other galleries because I feel very well here thanks to people as you, my favorite Texan. @lejimi [every photo "needs improvement"]: Perhaps I'm not exigent, but I saw many photos that are pure perfection and I couldn't know how to improve them and I don't wanna know, I just enjoy them.

lejimi ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 3:34 AM

Hello, @ enax : [I saw many photos that are pure perfection] What's the point of view of the person who made the photo ? I mean : every one does it's best, but you can't improve yourself if you're convinced that this best is perfection. In fact, I'm sure that life would be quite boring if everything was perfect : all the fun comes from dealing (succesfully) with problems, and running (hopelessly) after perfection. That "hopelessly" makes us enjoy.

enax ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 3:42 AM

@ lejimi: [I saw many photos, not mine, that are pure perfection] About my photos I analyze them and I try to improve every time that I take the camera.

lejimi ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 4:47 AM

But what do they think about their own work, they who made this photo that you love so much ? I don't think they would say it's perfect... But it's only my point of view (and I agree with it ;-) )

cynlee ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 10:09 AM

...as you are my favorite too francesc, i view for the sheer pleasure & awe of seeing such beauty, & love having a gallery to go to right at my fingertips full of inspiration & great vision huge hugz :]
