Subject: Insufficient memory!!!??? What does it take to render a simple Poser scene???

MartinPh ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 3:25 AM · edited Fri, 20 September 2024 at 4:28 AM

I am running into serious trouble doing renderings in Poser. I know that when you hit the render button, it looks as if the system crashes, but it doesn't (though that's a feature that definitely needs improvement - it would be nice too if the render engine, instead of telling you what it is doing (..."adding objects"...) would tell you how long the render will take). However, if even a draft render hasn't shown up after 30 minutes, something's not right, is it? Last night I decided to give the much touted Firefly renderer a serious try, and make a high quality rendering of a very besic scene: 1 M3 figure, textured, with two items of clothing (one morphing), hair, and one extra light. Nothing fancy, I would say. Nonetheless, it took Poser literally all night to come up with an image, in which the additional light was absent. I also found a warning on my screen the next morning, saying that the system had reverted to using the hard drive for extra storage due to "lack of virtual memory". Excuse me???? I am working in Windows XP Home on a Pentium 4 machine with a 60 GB hard drive, 1 GB ram, and a brand new nVidia GeForce fx5950 256Mb graphics card. Intricate Vue scenes with millions of polygons and complex light and shadow effects are rendered without any problems. So what's going wrong here??? I was running no other programs beside Poser, btw, and even switched off my screensaver! If this is normal in Poser, I hate to think what would happen if I tried to render a scene with multiple figures!

Increase your virtual memory settings. Poser relies on those settings native to the system, while Vue creates it's own effective swap file. It sounds like you have windows managing them for you, which tends to really muck things up. Right click my computer | Advanced tab | performance -- settings button | Advanced Tab | little button almost at the bottom that says change | set up your VM on a drive that is separate from your windows installtion and ideally from your poser installation as well if possible, and set it to a custome size of at minimum 1024 and a maximum of 3096 or more. Then click set, ok out, reboot, and you should be ok.

thou and I, my friend, can, in the most flunkey world, make, each of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)

IMHO, that sounds WAY wrong. I have no problem rendering 1024x780 images using multiple M3/V3/S3 type figures in a few minutes (2gHz Athlon, 1gb RAM, 120 gb HDD). Perhaps a virus? I have had a problem with W32pinfi virus completely killing .exes.

Check this web page for help in speeding up Firefly. http://www.keindesign.de/stefan/poser/renderer.html In it's default settings Firefly is slower then frozen mud!!!!

Searching on the word "insufficient" turns up the following: (this doesn't count any threads where the person spelled the word "insufficeint").

Sorry that the above message ends with 8/1/01... the search returned results going back to 1999, but the forum posting only allowed 30,000 characters, so I couldn't fit the entire result into one posting. I guess I could have posted links to the other threads in this post, but hopefully, these will provide you the answer you're looking for.

MartinPh ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 11:04 AM

Still, I dont seem to be the only one with this problem... Thats some comfort. However, increasing virtual memory to 3000 Mb didnt make any difference. I saw another post that made me wonder if this is my problem: 2. Re: How do i asign more memory to poser 4? by EnglishBob on 2/4/04 10:03 That message is a catch-all Poser error which often means that it can't find some part of the thing you're trying to open; usually the OBJ geometry. Is something like this mentioned in the error message? The render does seem to get stuck at the "adding objects" stage.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 11:34 AM

What hair are you using? If it's Neftis hair, you may have trouble rendering it in Firefly even if there's not much else in the scene. Neftis uses very large textures, and a lot of them, and Firefly often chokes on them, unless you have a very powerful computer indeed. The solution is to render with the P4 renderer, or to reduce the size of the textures. (The hair still looks good with the textures reduced to 1/4 the size.)

MartinPh ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 12:36 PM

Randym, thank you so much - thats it! Rendering in the P4 renderer was no problem, I had the draft render in less than a minute; next, I threw out the hair (Mihai from Daz), and than I could render it with Firefly as well!

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 2:03 PM

Glad I could help. :-) And I hope this doesn't put you off either Neftis hair or Firefly. They are both pretty cool. They just don't play nicely together.

sandoppe ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 6:19 PM

Yes....the Neftis hair does present problems with firefly (or vise versa!) A note about setting memory with Windows XP: Not sure about the home version, but my XP Pro makes those memory adjustments automatically when a render is using more resources that are available. You'll get a little yellow triangle popup warning and then XP will simply shut down things that aren't needed to free up resources and allocate more memory to the rendering process. Pretty slick if you ask me!

MartinPh ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 9:20 AM

Actually, the main benefit I got from changing the memory settings is a much faster start-up! So it is worthwhile I think to fiddle with it...
