Subject: there's a hole... (no there isn't)

I'm new to Vue so this is probably simple question, at least I hope. I want to make a window in a wall but every time I try I just get the wall, the whole wall and nothing but the wall. I can't get a hole in it to put the window in.
I don't think it's very complicated but I didn't find it in the helpfile so I'm asking anyone to tell me how this is done or where to find the information.
