Subject: Do Messages Disappear ?????

Strixowl ( ) posted Sat, 06 March 2004 at 1:55 PM · edited Thu, 13 February 2025 at 3:54 AM

I realize this may not be the place, but I don't know where to go. Please direct me if it's the wrong place. I was wondering if messages in a members IM box start being deleted after a certain period of time. Since Thursday Feb 26th I have had 9 IM's disappear. A few each day and some days none, but 9 as of this morning. Anybody know what's up? I've lost some valued info.

I have noticed that too. And it's a fairly new thing. Before they started to delete old messages I had some from way back. Among others the very first one I ever got. It's VERY ANNOYING that they're deleted, I had info in some of mine, downloads, updates, adresses, you name it :o( They could at least TELL us so we could back them up :o(((

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Yes, it's happened to me too, and it is annoying.

Don't know how long they persist offhand, but there were a couple posts about it 'way back when. I've Emailed my IM Archives page to myself every 2-3 months or so since then.

Lost another one over night :-( Like ernyoka1 said: They could at least TELL us so we could back them up :o((( "Annoying" isn't exactly the word I would use to discribe my feelings about this highly inconsiderate move by TPTB. These are 'my' private messages. I should at the least be notified.

Well that's exceedingly annoying. There should be a warning! Whenever I won an item through a contest I would stick it in the archives for future reference.

Me too, Caly. I have lost a LOT of links people have sent to me, both things I've swapped and things I've won. I also had some people's adresses, both e-mail and Real ones there. Yeah I know I could have backed them up years ago, but it has never been NECESSARY before. And yes I DO realize that all those PM's must take up valuable server space. But if they had only TOLD ME that there was a max of say 50 messages or 2 Mb or whatever I would at least have KNOW in and started backing them up. As it is now, they simply evaporate :o(

Anyone still have an UNARCHIVED message older than 12/31/03 (my oldest)? Did they just ditch all messages prior to '04? Although I guess the real question is will we get some notice before it's done again?

My oldest goes back to 9/8 - probably based on space rather than age. For real answers, you might try IM'g an Admin or mod, or just post the question in the Community Center forum http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12357 That's where I read about it 'way back when. (It was called team contact and community ideas back then, I think). It's nothing new, It's been happening continuously for as long as I've been a member.

It is 6 months in either the archives or the main IM file. Why archive? And yes, I've lost phone numbers and addresses and messages that I wanted to save. :sigh: I thought that throwing them into the archive would keep them from getting pitched after 6 months. Carolly
