Subject: PZ3's TOO BIG! Making pose files for putting on clothes?

tedbragg ( ) posted Thu, 11 March 2004 at 8:38 AM · edited Sat, 20 July 2024 at 2:47 AM

I put conforming clothes on Vicky, slipped hair on her head, then saved. I just saw the file size and my jaw hit the floor: 30megs?!? I had no idea PZ3's stored the geometry. Is there a way to make a script that loads a figure, fiddles with the heir., conform clothes to it and hair? This would make for a smaller file. One would think a program like Poser would use a script or some sort of framework file to pull up the geometry when loaded, not store the whole thing in one wad. I have Poser 4.0.3

Poser stores the geometry in the PZ3 if it was embedded anyway (often the case with hair and props) or if you've used the Group tool on it, otherwise it just puts a reference in. Most PZ3s seem to be over 20MB, and 100MB is not unknown. If you want to reduce the size try turning props and hair into external geometries (there are tools and tutorials, though I can't remember where) and, in the case of Millennium 3 figures or the RDNA MicroCosm, make sure you don't leave unused morphs injected.

So you're saying there's no way to make pose / mat / script files that simply load a figure, conform clothes and attach hair and other props?

If you have Vicki's morphs injected, that blows up the file size really quickly - especially head morphs, because her head has so many polys. That's a more likely cause than embedded geometry, unless you also have some huge props. 30MB is about right for a single V3 plus some clothes and hair.

I never save in PZ3, i always use PZZ poser's compressed format, its much smaller, they are all usually under 5mb, thats a V3, highres textures, clothing, lots of lights..etc -SimderZ- xXx

Hi Simderella, Does saving in that compressed file remove any of the details when it is re loaded? cheerio lululee

The compressed file doesnt lose any details when reloaded, if it was lossy compression then the figures wouldnt work when loaded back into poser. The compression format is gzip. I have only seen this format used with dem files (apart from with poser).

Thanks xantor. My computer will definitely thank me for this. cheerio lululee

Morph targets are you're big enemy. Pz3 files do NOT store geometry unless its custom geometry and only in poser 4. They reference the geometry from the obj file in the geometries folder. What does get stored are geometry for props and morph targets. V3 morphs are huge. The morphs to adjust clothes are even worse at times. A few things to cut down sizes are 1. Using magnet packs for body shaping instead of morphs. I use magnets for body shape and only use morphs for facial expressions. The magnets do a real good job at shaping and shaping the clothes to fit plus you can change the body shape around without needing more morphs. 2. Delete ALL unused morphs. 3. Compress morphs into one body style. I do this on my older vicky2 figures. Basically get the figure the way you want the do a create morph on very body part that's changed. The make that a new full body morph. Now you can delete all the old morphs and have just one body shaping MT. I don't do this with v3 since her mesh is more dense and so a full body morph for the shape I want can get spendy memory wise. Plus I'd have to make body morphs for any clothes I stick on her.

Actually, there is a way to do what you want. I did package a few things using it, and realized that no one cared so I stopped. Give me a few days and I will get an example to you. Rebekah

Ted, sounds like you are using Vicki 2. As mentioned above, delete all unused morphs. (V2 is huge because of all the morphs). Morph Manager 4.0 (free) is easy way to do this. Save this slimmed-down V2 as a CR2, NOT as a PZ3. So you can add her to any scene. Similarly, after clothing her, save back to library (will be cr2). That little "+" at the bottom of the library pane on the right side of your screen. Files will be smaller, and Poser will load them faster :-) - - - - - sixus1 I look forward to your example. That would be useful.
