What processor from AMD would some of you recommend for running Poser 5? Please don't mention the 64 or Opteron.......my moneys(LOL) said hell no....

An Intel... actually, I just installed an AMD64 3200+...it's just great, but I'm a bit surprised that Poser5 still does not render all that fast, even with SR4 installed. There's speed up, but I wouldn't call it awe inspiring... A good benchmark pz3 would be great...thought there was one floating around a bit ago. I think the thing that really helped Poser, was an increase in ram from 512 to 1gig...my hard drive is not being used... plus textures, mat files, etc load really quick...

I've run Poser on a K6-2 350, Athlon 700, XP-1700, XP-1800, XP-2500+ (Barton core), and currently on an XP64-3000 (512k of L2 cache), and Poser has handled all of them easily. The XP-2500+ is probably your best bet; price is down, and it is old enough that the BIOS issues with the new core have been worked out.

I have to agree there...for nearly no cash at all :) the 64 isn't really all that bad, but I think the Intels would run Poser better. If you look at the benchmarks, graphics apps run faster on the p4 than AMD XP chips.

Not sure if this would help but, I have a P4 running at 2.0Ghz with 1Gb of Ram & an AMD 3200+ running at 2.6Ghz with 512Mb Ram & poser runs the same on both machines. I think it was SnowSultan who posted the benchmark pz3 files a while back, apologies if I'm wrong on that tho.

Check the apps being benched, though, Dave. -All- of them are coded for SSE-2 and many for Hyperthreading. Poser in any flavor uses neither of these, just straight old fashioned X86-32 code, and AMD's processor pipeline is one -hell- of a lot shorter than Intel's is, nowadays. That's one of the reasons they can turn in eqivalent performance clocking only at 70% of the Intel chips clock speed. And don't toss off the Athlon 64 just yet. You can get an Athlon 64-3000+ for under or at $200 at Newegg, and the motherboards are in season. Socket 754 may be limited, but there is planned support through a 4100+ version, so there is -some- upgrade path. And the speed increase you get from the HyperTransport data pipes on the motherboard, and the memory controller on the CPU, are niiiiiiiiiiiiice...... Not to mention you can get a mobo loaded with the amenities.
