THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Had an idea but need some suggestions to get it to work

Hi the scene I'm trying to make is a forest scene for 2 poser characters I've set it up in poser but don't like the effect. so the idea I had was that I actually don't need too many trees, make a backdrop of terrains that look like bushes/trees in the distance, but I need to add the odd trunk/branches (i'll use real trees and props for closer ones) but for the further ones Ive been playing with terrain editor. what I am thinking is the river delta effect (branching) then try to invert it use the clipping bracket to give me the trunk and branches then rotate by 90 degrees, if you see what i'm getting at! Problem cant quite generate the river delta/tributaries effect any ideas? I've been playing with ideas to do this scene for months (november) but I cant get it to look right without going mad on importing objects or many trees. flat planes work but not all the time. Dave

hmm... well you could try a couple of things... in a case like this, depending on the thickness of the forest, i'd think of doing 3 renders. one for the background (mountains, whatever you want). 1 for the trees, and another for the foreground (like placing your characters on a grassy hill so it can obscure the difference between the layers). the basic technique for the threes would be to just multireplicate them. if that kills your computer, only replicate about 20 of them, randomize them across a 2D setting and set them as the foreground to the middle plate. then render a single tree against a black background (no atmosphere, nothing, making sure the lighting is the same though), render an object mask for it, compose them both in photoshop or whatever you have, import the result on a 2D plane, add transparency to the black part, and just multireplicate that to your heart's content in the background of the real trees. should work. drac

Hi thanks Drac it's the lighting with the 2d planed ,getting them to look right that I have problems with so thats why I had the idea of the terrain trees but having trouble making them. I'll keep trying but I will keep your ideas in mind Dave

Know just what you're talking about, I've tried it with not much success, only because I seem to suck at "painting" trees in the terrain editor.

But, it IS very possible to do this. Best example I've seen here.

There's two older lattice tree tutorials by Clayxa at the link above. Hadn't seen hobbit's tree before - really impresive! HTH; Dan
