Subject: Weird P4-P5 Problem-- Mac Warning

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sat, 08 May 2004 at 6:18 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 2:42 AM

Heyas-- Some of you may remember me from 'way back when. I've been absent for a while, the reason being that I never upgraded to Poser 5, and then the Classic interface for Mac couldn't handle running P4 across systems, so I kinda got out of the loop... anyways, I've just landed a bit of work and got Poser 5 (woo!) and am encountering a strange difficulty. I pointed Poser 5 at my Poser 4 Runtime folder, and bing, there's all my stuff! Hoorah; I have a lot of it. However, when I load Mike 3 and go to inject some morphs into him, the machine can't find them, looking in the P5 folder. I reinstalled Mike, but that didn't fix it (it installed everything in the old P4 Runtime folder, as far as I can tell). What's the best thing to do about this, do you reckon? I ma most grateful for your advice.

You have to move a folder called !daz from your poser 4 runtime into your libraries in poser 5. that fixes it. ie it sits just above the camera library in your poser 5 runtime libraries folder. Love esther

Thank you very much! I will do just that. I'm glad to see this place is going as strong as ever and I'm looking forward to being around a bit more now.

The injection files have to reside in the main P5 runtime. Make a copy of Runtimelibraries!DAZ from your P4 runtime in your P5 runtime.

When running a DAZ installer you can cancel the search and choose where to install.

Thanks again! I tend to let the installers do whatever they want... they usually seem to know what they're doing. It's a great help. I was just so glad I didn't have to move/reinstall all my myriads of stuff... from my limited experience Poser 5 absolutely rocks.

Let me know how posing speed goes on P5. I find it quite slow, but then poser only sees 500mhz processor ie 1 out of my two, and I have a gig of ram. Love esther

Erk, I think I won't be able to match you at all... I'm using an old 350 mhz G4 with a gig of ram. Still, it seems to be comparable to rendering time in OS9, and I was able to render a file with Stephanie, a Brycetech critter, AND some Kozaburo hair, with textures, without encountering an out of memory error. That's never happened before.

It's the posing which is really slow. Drives me mad. Rendering you can do other things while it's happening. But posing slowly - try to turn a dial and nothing happens for ages etc. Love esther

I'd suggest a processor upgrade as your next major cash outlay. I think Otherworld computing is selling a processor for your machine for around $200, IIRC. I just upgraded from G4 750 Mhz to G4 1.2Ghz, and posing is no longer slow!

Oh wow, well that's great to hear. Because I'm planning to buy a G5 just as soon as I can get some cash. (Mind you that upgrade doesn't sound that expensive.). Love esther

Indeed... I would never have bothered getting Poser 5 if I didn't know that I would be inheriting my husband's G5 in the not too distant future. Right now, I'm just not going to touch the hair or cloth features.
