Subject: Grouping props together in a scene?

Michael_C ( ) posted Wed, 19 May 2004 at 7:23 AM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 7:10 AM

Is there a way to group separate props so that the act as a unit? I would like to make the entire set visible or invisible with a single click. I've assembled a complex structure from dozens of separate props (DAZ Temple Ruins). I used the hierarchy editor to associate them so at least I can move them together, but making the top level object invisible has no effect on the rest. Thanks.

can you link two props, save it as a single prop or obj file then reload it?

Short of writing python code there is no way of doing what you are trying to do. Each of these props are a seperate entity and Poser does not have any grouping capability.

I think you can export the group as an Obj and import that group as a single file, but I haven't tried it myself.

You can parent props to each other so they all move when you move the parent. But scaling and visibility won't work...you still have to do those individually. Unless you go the import/export route.

If you have them parented together, you can use my ChildrenVisible/Invisible scripts to set the visibility all at once. (The zip contains both scripts)

Thanks to all. It looks like Ockham's scripts are exactly what I need. I'll give them a try tonight. I thought about the object export, but considered that might be a little tedious to get what I need right now, especially since there are many individual textures. It might be a good idea if I want to use the whole temple again.

Here is an alternate method to using a python script, it has the advantage that it should work in any version of Poser.

Attached above is a text file, save it to a sub-folder of the character folder and rename it "MinFig7.cr2". Load MinFig7 into Poser (it will be invisible), parent all the props that you want to act as a group to the 'Body' acter of MinFig7.

Just about anything you do to the MinFig7 will also happen to the props parented to it. Select its 'Body' actor, then from the menu bar do; Object > Properties > Visible, and its children are hidden/unhidden. Scale it and its children ara scaled. Rotate it and its children rotate. Lock it and its children are locked. Save it to a Figures pallet and its children are saved with it. Delete it from the docoment and its children are deleted.

You may also want to lock the individual props, so that they can't be moved individually, but only as a group when you move the Body.

MinFig7 is basicly just a cr2 file without any geometry.
