Subject: Realistic candle flames?

Can anyone tell me a good way to create realistic candle flames?

Take two 2d planes at 90 degrees to each other with an image on each. Encapsulate that with a radial light adjusted properly.

Edit the flame image in PS to create masks, etc.

Even simpler, take a single photo of a candle flame, apply to a 2D plane or to a Da Vinci plane, turn towards the camera and that's it.

That's a great image, but I think the blue part needs tweeking more to the centre and needs to be sharper at the top...0.02p

Bryster, I think that is an actual photo of a candle flame. I found what appears to be the same image at this link.

OK, I recently posted an image that had a candle flame made from volumetric fire that I wasn't happy with so I took the opportunity to upgrade that image with a 2d pic with a candle flame photo. The link is to that new image.

And finally, here are the material settings for the 2d pic. I did a bit of postwork to make it look a bit more real in the image, (added a glow and a bit of cloning in Photoshop Elements), but if the candle had been further from the camera or smaller, postwork might not have been necessary. Jasonmit (and anyone else) feel free to use these pics and material settings if you want to. John

Thank you tjohn, I'm seriously in need of a candle flame for an image I'm working on at the moment. 8)

That's exactly it! The image in my post was just the first one I found on a google search.

Thanks everyone. Now does anyone have a Bryce recipe for candle wax?

I think AgentSmith was doing something like that with his "blurred transitions" experiments...
