AS, thank you in advance, man ! :)

Man...does THAT bring back memories. When I live in "small town" Illinois as a little boy, there was no cable TV and really only the 3 networks (abc, nbc, cbs) We had an antenna almost exactly like this. Approved and in freestuff. AgentSmith

It's rare to see them anymore here (California). Either a person has cable tv, or a "dish" perched on their roof. AS

Heheh... I remember those old arials too. When I was little there was one on my roof. Even when we got cable, we kept it for a good while because it was already wired to more than one room. I also lived in Illinois and got these chanels (dunno if you'd remember these or not A.S.): 2 CBS, 5 NBC, 7 ABC, 10 PBS (Milwaukee), 11 WTTW (PBS, Chicago), 20 WYCC (PBS/College, Chicago), 26 WCIU, 32 WFLD (Fox, Chicago), 44 (dunno, they didn't speak English), and 50 WPWR (UPN.) And sometimes on occasion there might be another Wisconsin, Michigan, or Indiana based station that would come in. Not a bad selection, although reception wasn't so great on some of the UHF channels (bad fade out, ghosting, snow, and all that other good stuff that happens w/o cable.)

Yup, I remember 2, 5, 7, and 10. I'm not sure if we got the others (I bet we did), but at that point in my life all I cared about were the channels that would show cartoons, lol. We did get a few UHF Channels, but as you say just barely. AS

Yup! They charge us for a tv 'license', that's a permit to recieve tv signals. Then they give some of that to the BBC - the most arrogant, self-opinionated, self-serving, bunch of idiots on the face of the planet. Who, incidently, got slagged-off recently for broadcasting 10% more repeats than they did last year........

WHAT?! They charge you for receiving broadcast television signals?! Wait, I think I remember someone mentioning that before...(that does sucks) Well, then they must not have a need to air commercials then huh? (yeah, right) Americans get a filtered taste of BBC with the "BBC Channel". We get it with our cable tv package, love that channel, and all the comedy shows. "Coupling" is my fave!! Then the stupid USA tv studio thought they could just copy Coupling's formula and it would be a hit here...it was beyond horrible. Serves'em right. Can't copy British humor. One thing we don't get with the BBC Channel are the commercials British people see. I see a lot of commercials for places in the USA that carry imported food from Britian (cheese, crackers, drinks, specialty stuff, etc). Stuff like that. AS

AS: For a start the BBC doesn't take commercial advertising unless it's for it's own products. If it had to survie in the commercial world it would fall on it's backside. Yup! The Gov charge us about 125 for the privalage of watching tv but don't take any responsiblity for the BBC's programming and won't discuss what other channels get upto. For instance, you can't get our Channel 5 everywhere, so although we all pay the same tv tax we can't all get the same channels, some get 4, some get 5. I phoned the TV license people about this and they said 'tough!' I have phoned the BBC to complain about programming on several occasions and they argue with you! They don't write down your complaint and pass it on to those in charge, they just give you a hard time on the phone.....! Sorry! Pet gripe! I'll hand back the thread to Kemal.....

Man...sorry to hear about ALL that, you're getting bent over a barrel in many directions. All I really have to complain about is the price of my cable tv and cable internet, both $50 (each/month) But, they work, and work well. And, you are showing me I have little esle to bitch about, lol. AS

Well if you wanna get taxed to death, the best place in the world is the UK. Do you know how much we pay for gasoline? 0.80p per litre...u do the math.

Unless I got it wrong, that's about $1.50 USD? (I used "http://www.xe.com/ucc/", and "GBP United Kingdom Pounds) In Los Angeles, we are at $2.20 to $2.60 USD a gallon right now. It's rough. (I think that would that be 1.17 - 1.38?) But, then again, I believe about $0.15 of that is a permanent Southern California thing, because we have to use a "special, cleaner" gasoline mix, because our pollution is bad. If its cleaner, why desn't ALL of the USA use it? ...because that would be logical, that's why, lol. AS

I'm in two minds about all of this - as a consumer I rage at what I have to pay for petrol, but at the same time I wish that people would use less, and one way of limiting its use is to up the price :o( Bryster - at least the Beeb gives you 2 commercial-free channels in return for your license-fee. We pay a license-fee, but STILL get commercials!! But playing Devil's Advocate, I think it's A Good Thing to have channels that can't be bullied by big corporations. Why should our viewing be totally governed by what suits advertisers? However..... !!!!!wavering back to the other side of the argument!!!!! BSkyB are going to have to refund money to advertisers because their programming was so lousy last year that they lost loads of viewers! Rotten cheap reality shows and competitions. Maybe there's a happy medium somewhere, wonder if we'll ever achieve it? :o)

In case you don't know......we have tennis tornement called WIMBELDON over here, the BBC use blanket covereage for the 2 weeks this is on. This year I found that BBC1 & BBC2 were transmitting the same pictures of the same game at the same time - live!!!!! go figure...............
