THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: water displacement

I am trying to fly an object into the water at an angle. How do I do a water displacement map when the object goes into the water? How can I make the object effect the water?

With effectively placed metaballs or water-textured terrains.

You could do an altitude render of the object from the water's viewpoint, use that render as a terrain, and then use it as a boolean object to cut a chunk out of the water. Bet that explanation's as clear as mud! Or, more simply, why not duplicate the object and make it into a boolean object? Then group it with the water. It might help if you stretched it a bit lengthways as well, so it seems like it's gouging a path into the water.

Create a terrain to use as the surface of the water. I like to set the fractal mode to lava, but use what works for you. Copy this into an image editing program. Render an object mask of the ripple causing object and save this image. Use the object mask as a starting selection over the terrain map. Enlarge the selection a little and feather some, darken this selection and set as a new layer. Back to the original selection, enlarge it a little more and feather it some more, lighten this selection and set as a new layer. Do this several times till you are done making ripples. Now you can use this as the terrain map for the water. Basically, what they said. This picture was an unfinshed WIP, not the best exxample but it shows the idea.

xenic101 - good tip. It gives me an idea for fixing a problem I am having with a underwater scene. Thanks!

Didn't you know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That's why eyedrops and rose-colored glasses are needed.
