Subject: How do I add and conform clothing to figures??

Sephyn74 ( ) posted Wed, 11 August 2004 at 9:37 AM · edited Sun, 28 July 2024 at 7:40 AM

I know this has probably been asked a thousand times, but I cannot figure out how to get clothing to work with any figures. It doesn't seem to matter what type of clothing it is, dynamic or conforming, if it goes on the arms, legs, body, etc, it does not work for me. My "Figure > Conform To" menu option doesn't work - it always stays gray no matter what I click on. Is there something that I'm not doing right? I've tried reading dozens of websites for tutorials on how to get clothes to go on figures but can't find much of anything. Maybe I'm missing a file somewhere? Hats, necklaces, watches work just fine. and I can parent props like balls and canes to hands so they move along with any poses. But my figures remain naked. Please help, someone.

You don't conform dynamic clothing. Go to PoserFashion.net for some tutorials on dynamic clothing. For conforming clothing, make sure the item is meant for the figure you are using. Make the clothing active (it should be listed under the main window). Then do the Figure -> Conform thing. What clothing and what figure are you trying to use?

Hi. Yes, I know dynamic clothing isn't conforming. But even my "conforming" clothing doesn't work with the conform option. Also, most all my clothing is listed in sub-directories under the "Figures" menu in the library. That is both conforming and dynamic clothing. I don't know if that's suppose to be there and/or if that might have some reason as to why it won't conform. There is some (a few pieces) of clothing, (all or most is conforming), in the Props - Clothing menu of the library. But they won't conform either.. I am also aware that certain clothes are made for certain figures. Vicki, Mike, etc. I've been mostly dealing with Don Nude Hi Res. An example of the clothing piece I've tried putting on him is the P5ManNehruCoat_1.... I've been to poserfashion.net but have yet to find anything there that is very helpful as far as tutorials go. I've been to several websites looking for tutorials, including this one. Lots of tutorials with some really good info, but none seem to specifically tell me how to do this. I've even read the P5 user manual a few times. Also, every time i rotate now, everything in my window turns to blocks - figure and all. I just installed the SR4 update pack. So is this a setting somewhere? Just a side note. Wasn't doing that before the SR4 update... :) very frustrated

duh.. forget that last thing about the blocks. i didn't realize that the "fast tracking" button was on. durp. no, really... i'm not as dumb as i look, honest.

The P5ManNehruCoat is a dynamic clothing prop and can't be conformed. I think you are trying to conform dynamic clothing. Everything in the figures library should be conforming clothing, and everything in the props library should be dynamic. If they're mixed up, then either the maker of the pack put the paths in wrongly, or if you installed them by hand then you put them in the wrong folders. Do this: Load Don nude, then navigate to the Figures>Clothing- Conforming>Clothing - P5 Male folder and select a piece of clothing from here. Click the double tick mark to add to the scene (don't double click the thumbnail or Don will vanish.) Make sure the clothing is selected in the dropdown list under the pose window, then go to conform it. Hope that helps.

Dynamic clothing is usually in the Props section. And no, you cannot conform it. Conforming clothing should be in the Figures section.

I've been mostly dealing with Don Nude Hi Res. An example of the clothing piece I've tried putting on him is the P5ManNehruCoat_1....

I don't think I've ever used P5 man or his clothing. And I don't have P5 on this machine, so I can't check. Did this item come with Poser 5? And are you sure it's meant to be conforming clothing?

I've been to poserfashion.net but have yet to find anything there that is very helpful as far as tutorials go.

Download a free dress from their P5 section. It comes with instructions on how to use it. Dynamic clothing is very different from conforming.

so all i had to do is click the double check marks...? i've spent months.... litterally.... trying to figure out how to put clothes on don... so now i've gotta figure out what's conforming and what's dynamic.

dynamic clothes are always props and conforming clothes are always figures.

Sephyn74 ( ) posted Wed, 11 August 2004 at 1:22 PM

some of my dynamic clothing seems to be in my figures folders though... actually a lot of them. i didn't put them there manually, they unzipped to there, methinks. so now i gotta figure out how to use dynamic clothing, or convert them to conforming clothing, which i saw a tutor on somewhere but didn't understand it. i might now. any suggestions again would be nice. :)

Converting conforming to dynamic is done more often than dynamic to conforming. In any case, I don't recommend it for a beginner.

Dynamic clothing isn't hard to use, it just takes time. It's worth learning, because it looks better than conforming clothing, and animates much better.

Try looking around at PhilC.net. He's got free P5 clothes to download, and a tutorial on using dynamic clothes. I believe his P5 clothes come with both conforming and dynamic versions.

Don't believe everything you read in the manual. It tells you to double-click the thumb, I believe. Many a baffled user wanders in here believing they must be stupid... for reading the manual ;-) Anyway. Dynamic in props, conforming in figures. What makes you think you have some dynamic clothes in the figures library? Some of the P5 clothes I think come in both versions... One set in Figures, another in Props. Remember that clothes made for one figure won't fit another. So if for example you tried to put a dress made for V3 onto Judy, it won't fit. However, they can share some dynamic clothes, depending on the style. philc.net and poserfashion.net both have very useful tutorials on using the cloth room. However, for the newbie, conforming clothing is easier to work with and takes less time and hassle to set up.

Gotcha. Thanks everyone for helping me out. I've actually been using poser for a while, off and on. I've got posing figures pretty much down and use them in a lot of work that i do, i just could never figure out how to work with clothing, so all my people tend to be naked (and until recently, bald, but i have been catching on to the hair thing pretty quick lately so its not that difficult)- which is still rather artsy in itself, which i like. My machine is slow, so the cloth room takes forever (i did the tablecloth tutor and it took forever to go through). so i'm not sure how difficult the dynamic clothes are going to be. Can't clothes be resized to fit other characters? I have Don, Mike and Vickie. Don't know what happened to Judy, she just disappeared. She was there a while back but no trace of her now. lol.

Conforming clothes are generally only fitted to one character. This is mainly because the clothing contains joints and body parts, just like the model, and the way the joints are set up is different from model to model. For example, Posette (the P4 woman) doesn't have any "buttocks" - ok yes she has a butt, but her body parts go straight from hip to thigh. With some clothing models you can scale and position them, and instead of conforming them, try parenting them to the hip or chest, then applying the same pose to the clothes as to the figure. It's a bit hit and miss though. Works a lot better on loose-fitting clothes than on something tight.

Attached Link: Poser 5 beginner's tut.

I have a very beginner's tutorial for Poser 5, it also deals with how to conform clothes :o) You can find it at the link above.
