I'm trying to create a slightly dented polished brass object (Above). Using the Hammered Steel material I altered the colour and ambience. However, I find the dented portions to be too dark and I don't know what setting to use to change it. Can anyone help me with this?

Put the button back on zero position in Diffusion and raise the value to something you like. This way, the black and white areas of the metalbase8 determine how visible the colour is. Consequently, the dark areas have almost no colour showing. Ditto for the Ambience. And lower the value for Ambience, too. Greatly. BTW, you might want to raise the bump value afterwards.
