THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: new to bryce -- problems importing

MoxeyH ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 1:15 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 6:31 PM

hello there. I've been using poser 4 for a while but I'm just getting into Bryce 5 thru my roommate. So far, I've found it's skies and scenes are way ahead of poser's cyclorama, but other than playing with it a little I haven't tried anything serious.
anyhow, I was trying to see if i could test out and follow Robin Wood's Poser-to-Bryce tutorial to bring a two-figure grouping from poser into Bryce. I followed her directions but the three times i've tried exporting the figures from Poser as an .OBJ file and then reopening that file in Bryce I keep getting an error message saying invalid format. I'd like to find out what I'm doing wrong here and any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure how you're doing it, but you can't open an OBJ directly in Bryce. You have to use the File, Import Object menu option and it will list the OBJ files in the current directory and import the objects into your current scene.

If you haven't downloaded the update for Bryce 5 (5.01, I think) this may be part of the problem. Sorry I don't have the link, but someone will.

Thanks for the help. I tried importing it again in Bryce, using the method drawbridge describes, but I still get the same error message -- invalid format. It even happens when I click on user objects.

Just checking here MoxeyH. This is the import menu you're using isn't it? File> Import Object>

Attached Link: ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Bryce/5.0.1/

The update is still available via ftp from corel. Click on this link. You then need to choose PC or MAC Choose the folder for your operating language en=english de=german fr=french Bryce5.01update.exe is for the drawing program. That's the one you want. Bryce lightning is to let you network machines together to render.

If you exceeded the joint parameters, stuck an arm inside of a leg when posing etc. you can get the mesh tangled up so bryce can't read it. There is a program called grouper in the freestuff that can fix these so they import.

danamo --- hey! you have that control strip up there on your Bryce... for some reason, the one I'm using doesn't have that. I'm thinking there's maybe something wrong with the program. I've only used it maybe four or five times. let me check it again.

Nothing wrong with the proggy Moxey.....The "bar" is always invisible/hidden...you have to run your mouse over the top of your screen & it appears :)

danamo ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 4:01 PM

Yeah, every program has its quirks. Just bump your cursor into the top of the screen a few times and the menu bar should appear, lol.

I'm counting on this to be a fix in the Daz update ;)

Slakker ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 4:16 PM

I really hope not, because when working in a resolution that takes up your screen space the menu bar tends to cover buttons.

i had a hard time too finding that bar lol

for some free stuff i made
and for almost daily fotos

Poser needs to be updated, sir, if it's original(out of box) version, obj export is fixed in poser update found on www.curiouslabs.com ! This IS going to fix all your problems!!! :)

dan whiteside ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 7:30 PM

I'm with Kemal - Most of the "Invalid Format" errors are caused by problems with the exporting app. For some reason, Poser 4, as well as propack, export .OBJs that have text data where Bryce expects numeric. This doesn't happen on all models. To see if you have the problem open the .OBJ in a text editor and search for #ind (PC) or nan (Mac). If you find some just do a search and repalce all, replacing the bad text with 0 (zero). I have the newest ProPack updates for both platforms and I still have the problem. It's definitely fixed in Poser5. I also agree with Slakker - I like the extra screen real estate. Best; Dan
