.... anyway I attempted to immitate levels of focus / unfocussed in certain areas of image for this one... I'll now leave the forsest be and let it become lost in the archives, hopefully we wil have more than images to remind us of what earth was like in our time.

Have you tried out the 'photographic lens' kind of blur (CS)? That looks extremely nice and realistic. It works the best with a greyscale alpha channel with different kinds of depth in it (so there is a lot of painting to be done, like you probably did in masks), but once you have seen it, the standard Gaussian blur sticks out like a sore thumb.
