Subject: Replacement for ZBrush?

SnowFox102 ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2004 at 11:25 PM · edited Mon, 04 November 2024 at 12:44 PM

I'm sure this has been askedbefore, but I didn't see an answer to my question... Anyway, there's no way I could afford ZBrush, but my box modelling skills are limited, so I've been looking into alternatives. I've tried everything listed under the forum banner. I use Wings a lot, and everything else is over my head, not what I want, or isn't in English ;P I need a program that can "paint" features onto a pre-made model, like a height map. (I would try height map modelling but that's over my head too ;) ) I watched a video of ZBrush in action on the ZBrush site (the one with the angler fish) and it's exactly what I want. But its $400+ price tag is way out of my reach (I've been saving for a couple months for the $130 Poser 5 upgrade, and I'm only half way there x_x ) So is there anything besides Curvy3D that can do this? Or should I just hope that the Poser stuff I plan to make will be hot sellers? =/

I believe DeepPaint can do it... but,IIRC, that's pretty expensive, too. You can get the demo at Right Hemisphere's web sit for 30 days. I have another program that is absolutely free, but I have to wait untill I go to Modesto to remember what it's called. I was supposed to leave this morning, so I'll be there sometime tomorrow.

I'm not aware of a real alternative to ZBrush, Amorphium does similar modelling but last time I tried it, it was VERY difficult to control. I'm not sure it's much cheaper than ZBrush either. Maya has similar capabilities (not as well implimented though from what I've read) but that is MUCH more expensive. That's the problem, ZBrush is actually very cheap compared to most 3d apps. I suppose with practise you could paint displacement maps in Photoshop or similar, not easy though! It would be easier in Deeppaint or Body paint (still tricky though) but I believe they are more expensive than ZBrush!:o( - Baz

Ok thanks for the help. FrenchToast, if you remember what that free program was, please let me know. In the meantime, I shall learn from the great Wings modellers, and strive to be like them!! ;)
