Sorry if you think this is abuse of the forum but I need to find the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the people called, Harnack, Harnacke, Haarnack and Haarnacke (or any other variants) in Holland as my great grandmother was a Harnack. If anybody in Holland has access to an on-line or CD based telephone directory who could e-mail the answer to me at maz@sandylodge.demon.co.uk I'd be very grateful. Thanks, Maz

Thanks Darkness, that's enabled me to find 3 Haarnacks in Amsterdam. Unfortunately the web directory insists that I specify the woonplaats or place name and since the English names for places in Holland are different from the Dutch names that made it rather difficult. Is there any way to find all the Haarnacks without specifying the place names? Alternatively, could you please tell me the Dutch names for the six biggest cities, apart from Amsterdam? I've also tried Nijmegen because I've been there, though it's hardly a big city. Thanks.

Erh??? I have had 2 holidays motorcycling round Holland, and the only place that I came across with different names in English from in Dutch was The Hague = Den Haag (or formerly sometimes 's Gravenhage. Also note spelling: Haarlem (in Holland) / Harlem (in New York in USA). Some places in Friesland province have alternate names in the native Frisian language, e.g. Dutch Leeuwarden = Frisian Ljouwert. In older times Dutch "ij" was often written "y". Apart feom such things as "North Sea Canal" = "Noordzeekanaal", but that is not a settlement name.

OK, lets see. Groningen, Den Haag, Zwolle, Arnhem, Maastricht, Breda, Leeuwarden, Rotterdam, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Haarlem, Zaandam, Zoetermeer, Gouda, Hilversum, Dordrecht, Tilburg, Eindhoven, Helmond, 's-Hertogenbosch, Venlo, Nijmwegen, Heerlen, Nieuwegen, Zeist, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Enschede, Almelo, Lelystad.... hhhhhmmmmm think i got most of them! Good hunting:) Koen.

And besides Nijmegen because I knew that one. It turns out that there are only about 7 Haarnacks in Holland. I haven't checked the Harnacks yet. Now, does anybody know how I can do the same thing for France?
