THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: OT

I work for a very large media company. One of the advantages is that when economic times are bad, they have enough money to float the payroll through rough times and everyone keeps their jobs. However, large corporations also have numerous policies, many of them assinine. One of those policies is that they don't allow illegal software on their computers. I was using my office desktop to do much of my Bryce renderings. Despite the fact that I bought Bryce, my supervisor interprets "Illegal software as being any software not purchased by the company". I was turned in by a fellow employee whom I thought I could trust. I've been suspended from work for 2 weeks w/o pay. That in itself doesn't bother me. I've always been a rule breaker. In the army I was tossed in the brig for disobeying a lawful command. That's just me. No, what really saddens me, is that now I'm forced to do all my Brycing on my crappy home computer. :-( I think I'll use the two weeks to look for another job.

Sucks Big Time! Steal the good pc from the company and do your own thang! As for the guy who turned you in, send us his e-mail and we'll swamp him!

slashdot his mailbox trick eh!? (gotta throw in that eh, being Canadian and all)

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

There is a book out there called "A 101 Ways to get even". Some are funny and some are nasty. ;)

pogmahone ( ) posted Wed, 29 September 2004 at 2:15 AM

Telling everyone else what he did will be revenge enough. Nobody likes a snitch, everyone will start watching what they say when he's around. That'll give him the message OK :^) Though you need to be sure to be sure that it was him wot done it! Maybe they do sneaky security searches on all pcs, searcing for porn etc.?

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 29 September 2004 at 3:08 AM

oooh ouch, that sucks! what a stupid rule that is! making everything not bought by the company "illegal" :| if you bought it yourself it is good enough to be considered legal isn't it? I don't believe bryce needs multiple licences for multiple computers does it? If the guy turned you in, that's very nasty. If there's no security spy search like pogmahone suggested you could like, sign him up to the most nasty extreme disgusting hard porn e-mail list you can find :P Then when he opens his mailbox and people hear all the noises or see the pics or such he'll be dead embarrassed! LOL One of my friends did that once to her boss, her boss did something real nasty, I forgot what it was agian, but she signed him up to this freak e-mail list about people who have sex with cows and horses and god knows what. When he opened his mailbox all these moaning noises and such came from his e-mails and all! Her boss was sooo shocked! But he never found out who did it. But my friend, she just about died laughing every time she thpught about it for weeks, the look on the guys face when people came to check what was wrong with them noises and such was priceless!

I think that might REALLY mean the sack. Here (Ireland) the recently-appointed head of one of the biggest financial institutions had to resign awhile ago. Porn was found on his computer during 'routine maintenance'. Seems like he'd done the 'new broom' trick -laid off most of the computer maintenance guys, then hired them back under contract. The felt very bitter about it, and Lo and Behold, they find porn on his computer! It's widely believed that they were getting their revenge, but he couldn't take the embarrassment(sp?) But it sounds like it's moving into the actual 'criminal' area, which could have terrible repercussions.

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 29 September 2004 at 3:41 AM

Putting porn or other 'unusual' content in someones pc/mailbox is criminal? really?? wow, I didn't know that...

It has to be said most big corporations do the same. I had to show that I use Bryce occaisionally for work after installing. Installed software gets scanned every day...

I really really really disapprove of what you're suggesting. It's childish, vindictive, and may be illegal. Also, I think that sites like that shouldn't be encouraged - they're not funny, they're abuse of animals.

draculaz ( ) posted Wed, 29 September 2004 at 6:31 AM

yeah i completely agree.

i really do completely agree. i think it's horrible to both animals and that the real animals that make it should be put behind bars. but this is exactly why i JOKED that he should do it.

Thanks for all the support guys. Revenge is a double edged sword. It'll most likely back fire on me. I'll just concentrate on doing the best job I can and hope to out-shine him. I'd prefer to not give this pin-head a moment's thought. Although, my favourite book of all time is "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexander Dumas. But, Edmund Dantes had unlimited resources and 25 years to carry out is vendetta. In hind sight it was largely my fault for giving this guy an opening to screw me. He comes off being a really friendly guy, but when it comes to office politics he's a real nazi. He's the kind of character you see in Survivor. You know the guy that makes alliances with everybody, knowing full well he's going to betray them. Furthermore, I've read Sun-Tzu's "Art of War" at least 5 times. I should've known better. Hey Pog, I didn't know you were from Ireland. My mother is Irish. Her family is from county Kildare. Erin go braugh!

yup..the Lord loved a*holes, he made so many of them. In the US, the legal status is it's their PC, so they say what can go on it. I work for an even bigger company, who does a regular sweep of all PC's..can tell you what's on anyone's system..and as for prn, we have a zero tolerance policy, and anyone who's offended can turn the offender in, and out you go..happens around 75 times a year..
I do IT support, and the things I've found on people's machines..;) surprisingly (or not) the worst offenders are the security guards..go figure..;)

I heard a rumor that my boss got caught with some bad stuff on his pc at work. They said he'd manipulated photos of some coworkers. But since I don't know how true it is and I really hate spredding gossip, you guys are the only ones I've told. Sucks hearing dirt and not being able to tell a soul. But he is still my boss and I wouldn't want to risk losing my job. Makes me darn curious to know what those pictures were and why he didn't lose his job. :-D And I'm terrified every time I access renderosity from work that I might get turned in. But I'm so addicted that I can't wait till I get home. :

diolma ( ) posted Wed, 29 September 2004 at 5:41 PM

Bandolin, that's just (office) life. Look at it from the bosses/owners point of view (for a few mins, at least). They employ you to do a specific job. They provide (and pay for) the computer that you use to do that work (and only for that; not for your recreation/hobby). They are responsible if any "illegal" software is found on their premises. They have (however many it is) number of other people they also look after/monitor. Whilst I sympathise with your plight, I feel that your complaint overlooks the fact that you are using the equipment provided by the company for your own purposes, not for the reason that both it and you are being paid for. That said, surely just approaching a manager in the level above the supervisor, explaining that "you only use Bryce in your spare time, and it's not taking up any needed resources" (or some such fiddle-faddle) could resolve the situation to everyone's benefit? If not, I suggest you either save up for a new home PC (they're not THAT expensive these days) or start looking for another job..:-)) Please understand: this is not an attack, just a "Devil's Advocate" point of view.. I could well be (and almost hope I am) proved wrong in my reasoning.. Cheers, Diolma (and best of luck)

pogmahone ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 1:53 AM

Bryce is one of the few apps that allow you to install on more than one pc, so you can use Lightning. The license for most software specifically limits installation to just one machine. So, echoing what diolma says, your company would have no way of knowing that Bryce differed in that respect (though I wonder if it does, in this case. you might still be breaching the license). that said, he was a devious little s**t. Sit back and wait, and you'll get an opportunity to nobble him in some small annoying way, when he's not expecting it and doesn't know where it's coming from ;^)

bandolin ( ) posted Thu, 30 September 2004 at 8:37 AM

Once again thanks guys. Not only are you a Bryce support group, you're an emotional support group aswell. Feels good being apart of such supportive and positive people. Diolma nothing would please me better than to buy another PC. But, I had to plead with my wife not to cancel our DSL line. A new PC would be a tough sell, especially now that winter's coming and heating oil is expected to go through the roof. But maybe a little candle light, some romantic music, get grandma to take care of the kids for the weekend... Hmmm. Hey, any you girls out there have some ideas 'bout romacing my wife to soften her up for the "Get bandolin a new PC sales pitch"? ;-)
