The new Vue 5 has some pretty impressive rendering features, especially in the area of GI, HDRI, Radiosity (or however you want to define it). Some of the Miss Vicky renders (Poser related) are pretty close to photo-realistic (however you want to define it). It certainly gives DAZ Bryce another higher level to shoot for in its next release...

FYI - It's far easier to import Poser content into Vue than Bryce - it imports PZ3's directly so no messing about with objs or transparencies. I have Vue Pro and I've just ordered my Vue 5 upgrade *rubbing hands gleefully

I have been totally out of the loop lately. Is this Vue 5 upgrade an upgrade for Vue 4 Pro? cheerio lululee

You can 'sidegrade' from either D'Esprit or Pro The current version 5 on sale is D'Esprit....the pro version doesn't ship till later this year but since I have 4 Pro version I'll stick with that and just upgrade to D'E 5. Confused?? Sorry LOL!

Vue 5 is an upgrade from Vue 4; VuePro is the start of a new product line with some different features, so Vue 5 is a sidegrade from that.

Orio ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 8:51 PM

I add to this that you can sidegrade now from Pro 4 to Esprit 5 (like I did) for $99, or wait three months (but I am dying just for three days wait... how could I wait 3 months?) and upgrade from Pro 4 to Pro 5 (due out for year's end - unknown prices). It is my intention to dedicate my first hours with Vue 5 to testing thoroughly Poser figures within radiosity, global illumination and HDRI settings. I will post the results to the Vue forum but I'll be glad to put a link to the thread here too, for the Poser users who are interested.

Can you bring animation into Espirit5? cheerio lululee

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 9:06 PM

Wow, those renders look fantastic.

I pre-ordered Vue 5, even though I hardly ever pre-order anything. But I've been so happy with Vue 4 that I shelled out for Vue 5, sight unseen. I got the e-mail saying it shipped today.

Yes, got to admit those new sample images have me really PSYCHED-UP. I was going to wait for a while before ordering the Vue 5 upgrade- but the samples I've seen are pretty stunning, to say the least. Click on some of the example pictures on this link. WOW!

Now all those nice temples, Dystopia, etc. are going to look like LIGHTWAVE renders- all for only $149! ...heh!

randym77 ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 9:41 PM

They look great. I love the new lighting stuff. I can't wait to get my hands on this...

Byrdie ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 9:53 PM

Whoa! I'd love to try that. But ... how come there's no demo, only for Vue 4 and Vue Pro? Anybody know if/where I might find one?

Berserga ( ) posted Fri, 01 October 2004 at 10:43 PM

I'm definately gonna get it... just don't know when I can afford it. The render engine upgrades have me drooling, and unlike shade, I am VERY comfortible with the Vue interface. I get the latecomer upgrade price of $130 from Vue 4 cuz I just bought it this year. pretty sweet. Of course if they'd kick a hundred or so off the price of Vue Pro (and kill the bugs) I'd buy it instead :p Who can resist buying after watching Phoul's awesome video presentation? He sold me Vue 4, and He's gonna sell my Vue 5 too :D

DAZ Bryce will have a LOT of catching to to do! Plus Vue 5 opens the Japanese Shade format. There are a lot of SHD files on Japanese websites if you know where to look...

"It certainly gives DAZ Bryce another higher level to shoot for in its next release... " In case you guys don't know yet, Bryce 5 will not catch up for sure in release 5.5. Now real new rendering features will be implemented, except a speed improvement, but still the old rendering engine. Doesn't seem like Bryce 5.5 is going to have many new features at all, I guess we'll have to wait until Bryce 6 to get the real new stuff. Vue has really outdone themselves with the render engine this time, brining in a good number of improvements and brilliant new rendering features. Also the material editor has been improved a lot and gives one a lot of new possibilities to play with. Also being able to load Vue Pro plants and objects now is another great expansion. I'm really having a hard time believing Bryce will catch up anytime soon with Vue 5, especially in the area of rendering. Having played with D/S it's render engine for a while, I do find it a bit weak, DAZ will need to aquire a lot of knowledge (or perhaps buy and expensive third party render engine), so it will either take Bryce a long time to catch up or the price of Bryce 6 will soar and be leveled with Vue some more. I've bought DAZ Bryce 5 to finally see how it would do with Poser 5 import. It's not bad although it is some hassle, but the old render engine doesn't cut it anymore. It's now lightyears behind. I love the price of Bryce 5 and 5.5, but decided in the end that since it will take a long time for Bryce to catch up now and I'm not to sure if the pricing will stay this low. Seeing the amount of time that needs to be invested into Bryce to come near Vue 5 (or DAZ needs to aquire a lot of 3rd party coding), the price difference between Bryce and Vue may fade away soon. Of course it's also very dissatisfying to look at a Bryce render with Poser figures in it and then compare it with a Vue 5 render with Poser figures in it. The level difference between Bryce and Vue is so high right now, that by the time Bryce catches up, I may be old :)

Aeilkema- definately agree. I only got Bryce 5 after DAZ's amazingly low offer where I wound up paying just $26 and some change for it. I won't be spending on any further upgrade to Bryce 5 unless its also pretty cheap- since I rarely use it. I also have no use really now for Poser 5 either, since I personally never got into the way you have to do things in P5. P4 Pro-Pack has really been my Poser platform of choice as it is fast and easy to use and provides the ideal staging and set-up platform now for directly importing my Pzz's into Vue 5 for First Class Rendering looks. I own Max 3 and Lightwave 6.5 but never really got into them either. However, when I got Vue 3 years ago I IMMEDIATELY got into it and was turning out great renders I was very happy with. Now that Vue 5 is out I have a 3D program that I am EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE with and which can now deliver very high-end results! So for me its Pro-Pack for staging setups and then importing into Vue 5 for beautiful high-end rendering effects. Its the ideal workflow situation, and no need for B5 or P5!

Wow, I didn't realize that. That alone is worth the upgrade price, to me. The main complaint I have with Vue 4 is the limited vegetation available for it. I've been looking at the Vue Pro plants with envy. Woo-hoo!

I still expect to use Poser 5, though. I love the Cloth Room too much. :-)

IMO, DAZ shouldn't try to catch up with Vue. They're too small, and have too many irons in the fire to do that. Instead, they should stay a few steps behind, but offer the product for cheaper. Bryce 5.5 will be $99 - way cheaper than even the upgrade price for Vue 5. It's a nice solution for people who want to create landscapes, but don't want to shell out for Vue.

Dale B ( ) posted Sat, 02 October 2004 at 5:49 AM

lululee; If you mean Poser animation, you have to get the Mover 5 add-on to do that. But. Mover 5 adds some extra animation capabilities to the basic system that is there for Vue content ( 'Mover' is the name for the basic animation capabilities inherent in Vue and VuePro), and it supports most of Poser 5's features. Not the shaders at this time (well, save for one: the anisotropic shader for the glossiness in hair), but the dynamic cloth and hair import into Vue with Mover 5 just fine. Vue 4 and 5 will import -static- poser content from the get-go.

Consider me a new Vue Convert from Bryce since it supports Poser animation! I just placed my online order today. Got as far as the page where I'm supposed to download the Mover CD and the link takes me to a forbidden page. I do Hope they actually ship the CD for Mover 5 with the CD for Vue 5 since I can't seem to download the sucker from their website and the web page says the link is only going to be good for 24 hours!! O.o

I love Vue, but the e-on web site can be a pain. The first time I wanted to download an update, I was put into an infinite loop. It said I wasn't registered. When I tried to register (again), it said someone else was already using that e-mail address, sorry. Please register. I did eventually get some help from the web master by posting a request on their message board.

But don't worry, I'm sure they'll reset the link if necessary.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Sat, 02 October 2004 at 1:15 PM

I would rather they just put he CD in the shipping box with VIe 5 since I can't really use Mover 5 til I get Vue 5 anyway! LOL! Unless it works with the Vue 4 Demo I downloaded!

Byrdie ( ) posted Sat, 02 October 2004 at 1:21 PM

Does the Vue 4 demo even work? I got it yesterday but it kept crashing every time I tried to run it. Finally I just gave up and uninstalled the stupid thing :-(

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Sat, 02 October 2004 at 1:58 PM · edited Sat, 02 October 2004 at 1:58 PM

It works fine on my machine. But then I've not tried anything too complicated with it yet, just one terrain and a pyramid to see how it looked compared to Bryce. I mainly wanted it as an alternative to Bryce since it imports PZ3 animations's with Mover.

Darn, I must've buggered the installation up then. Have to get it again & see how it works. Tried View Pro & loved it but it's pricey and some of my other apps refused to work until I got rid of it so I guess I won't be buying that.

How does Vue 5 handle P5 shaders? Any improvement over Vue 4 Pro/Mover 5?

I'll let you know as soon as it gets here, but as far as I know, the only shader supported is the anisotropic shader for the hair highlights. There hasn't been a peep about shader support. On the other hand, they have mentioned enhancing the Vue material system, so there may be some more support there.

svdl ( ) posted Sat, 02 October 2004 at 9:49 PM

Yes, I'd love support for displacement maps, and I'd also love mapping of some of the procedural shaders to their equivalents in Vue (as many of them as possible!).

Phantast ( ) posted Sun, 03 October 2004 at 2:09 AM

AFAIK it is claimed that Bryce 5.5 will read pz3 files like Vue, and will also allow reposing of characters without leaving Bryce, which you certainly can't do in Vue 5. Also note that, at least in Vue 4, support for pz3 is far from complete. Vue may read the texture file and transparency, but its support for other material features is patchy and not entirely predictable. It would be nice if Vue 5 converted Poser 5 materials completely, but somehow I doubt it.

svdl ( ) posted Sun, 03 October 2004 at 2:22 AM

Reposing in Bryce would be a great feature indeed - planting feet firmly on the ground comes to mind immediately. I'd love to see that feature in Vue too. Maybe Vue 5 Pro, or a Mover 5 update?

I think the "pose within bryce" is really, select the poser figure and it will open DS with the selected figure loaded...you could accomplish this by opening poser and saving and tweaking...

Jcleaver ( ) posted Sun, 03 October 2004 at 7:45 AM

Unfortunately, no program outside of Poser 5 will read the shaders. My experience, having Vue, Carrara, Bryce, amoung others, is that Shade reads pz3 files best, (same company, makes sense), followed by Vue in a close second. I really do not expect Bryce 5.5 to do a good job of this, especially since their Daz|Studio has problems importing some pz3 files. I think over time, it will get better though. And mambra-negra is correct, the "Pose within Bryce" is just opening DS and posing. Will not work with Poser files, just DS files, AFAIK.

SteveJax ( ) posted Sun, 03 October 2004 at 11:39 PM

Phantast you need to go back and re-read what Bryce 5.5 will do at DAZ's Site. You can't repose in Bryce and certainly not PZ3 files. You click on Daz Studio Imported files and it will open Daz Studio, not Poser, where you can make modifications to the poses of Still framed Characters. Vue, with Mover will import whole PZ3 Animations not just still framed characters which is all DAZ Studo currently does. There is no animation in DAZ Studio.

Phantast ( ) posted Mon, 04 October 2004 at 5:04 AM

I'm not interested in animation. The reposing issue relates to textures. Suppose I import a Poser figure into Bryce and adjust all the textures (for example, one can get some interesting cloth effects using Bryce procedurals). Now I want to change the pose. If I can do this via Daz Studio through something akin to OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) so that, at the conclusion, the textures are all unchanged, then that is a marked improvement on what is possible at the moment. If, on the other hand, it's just glorified import-export and the Bryce textures are lost when the figure is reposed, then it's pretty much a waste of time.

Jcleaver ( ) posted Mon, 04 October 2004 at 8:02 AM

My guess is that any Bryce textures would be lost, as it seems to me to be a glorified import-export. The trick would be to apply the Bryce textures only after you have finished posing.

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 05 October 2004 at 2:54 AM

Not much use if you want to do a sequence of images of the same textured figure.
